Police officers are supposed to serve and protect however now thousands of people, including children no longer trust them. And this is because all of a sudden our beloved family members who happen to have four legs and fur are being shot and killed and in most cases simply because the officers say they felt threatened by the dog!!! These officers are trained to face several problems and dangers caused by humans who are more than capable to not only threatened but, kill the officers. People are given warnings to stop, put their hands up ect. Our dogs are protective over their humans and it does not matter if it's a Chihuahua, Beagle, German Shepherd or Mastiff. These cops often say they were chasing a criminal through people's yards however, the criminals are never found in the yard being attacked by these dogs they claim are vicious or charging at them. It has become a excuse to kill!!! And most are a bully type breed! This needs to stop, they need to be fired should they kill a family pet and prosecuted just as if it were a child because to many, these dogs are like their child!

I have read about this soo many times that i would hesitate allowing my dogs anywhere near a police officer. I respect the fact that they are trying to do a job to protect everyone but killing family pets is not protecting us. Please, we need proper training for these officer to recognize the difference between an aggressive dog or a dog doing its natural thing, protecting its family. Our dogs are our family and this needs to STOP!!!!

This inhumane, violent psychopathic behavior must stop. Police have become the most dangerous and worst enemy we have. Do not force us to begin treating you in kind, because we will.

This is one of the worst epidemics I have ever seen, and if something as simply as training can help lower the numbers of pets murdered than I honestly think this is something that everyone should stand behind. Be the voice the helps end the senseless killings.

I just read about a service man that had his heart borken by a cop killing his dog. This man did his duty, served his country and this is hoe he is re paid. He was having a hard time integrating back into his family and society. His "best friend" was a great source of comfort. He trusts know one anymore. This mans story is more than heartbreaking as is so very many other stories. Law inforcement today, their own magazine tell police chiefs to train their cops to stop or risk being sued.

I don't trust law enforcement or the justice system with our furry family members. This killing of our family members by cops is out of control. Stop allowing these thugs with a badge to get away with it. ENOUGH. Protect our pets. More training on how to read an animal's body language and make the punishment fit the crime. No more slap on the wrist ********.

This is absolutely outrageous that the people who are supposed to protect and serve are instead murdering our family members in cold blood. Please put an end to this immediately, and make sure that these officers are charged for their crimes!

This kind of behavior is completely unnecessary, and officers should be better trained for these situations. Of course a dog is going to bark at anyone they don't know coming on to their property! That's what dogs do. To just automatically pull out your weapon and gun down should not be acceptable.

There are laws against civilians abusing and killing dogs, it's about time our police officers have to abide by the same laws. They are no better than any of the rest of us.

Officers who are so afraid of pet dogs that they have to kill them shouldn't even be police officers. These are not hero material. They are cowards of the worst kind.

Dogs protect their yards and families, which is why they have shared the lives of mankind for centuries. Dogs save lives by protecting their territory and human 'pack'. Any loved and cared for dog will willingly throw its life away to protect the people it loves. That is precisely why people have dogs- the base ethos of the relationship between the descendant of the wolf/jackal and homo sapien sapien.

This has indeed become an epidemic in our country. It seems not a day goes by that another beloved family pet is senselessly gunned down by a trigger-happy law enforcement official. The fact that these officers are rarely punished beyond, perhaps, a verbal reprimand only adds salt to the wound of the affected families. Enough is enough. It's time that these callous acts by law enforcement be brought to justice and that education in the proper procedures for animal encounters be initiated in every law enforcement training facility and department across the nation.

It is heartbreaking, enough, that thousands of innocent animals are euthanized every day. It is emotionally devastating to read, and hear about, dogs who are killed by police who do not have a clue about animal behavior. There are non-lethal methods that can be used to control a dog if they are suspected of being aggressive. It is a fact that the sweetest dogs will defend their property and families. A fearful dog will bark loudly..and if a police office has not been trained to recognize animal behavior, he is is going to react per his own fear or misunderstanding of the animal's behavior, and a good animal will be lost to a family to whom that animal is a valued family member. We, also, need to be aware of those, on the force, who appear to have control issues or a sadistic motivation. Psychological testing, prior to entering the police force, could eliminate those with these issues.
