All college level cheerleaders should be recognized and should be given the same opportunities as athletes , such as stipends, scholarships ,etc. We do more physical activity than many sports but are not appreciated for our talent , hardwork and effort.REPORT COMMENTS

I've been cheering for as long as I can remember and when I went to high school I was sad to find out, cheerleading was not supported as a sport. These young women and men work just as hard as others and deserve to be recognized!REPORT COMMENTS

Cheerleading should be considered a sport because medically cheerleaders do not get the support we need. Personally I have experienced injuries related to cheer and many injuries, those of which I have experienced and those experienced from fellow cheerleaders, that could have been prevented. Not only that but cheerleaders do not get proper funding from schools like every other sport does. My team has had the same uniforms for eight years and we are suppose to get new uniforms every six years like every other sport. The cheerleaders have to fundraise for everything needed in cheer that our school doesn't provide. Basketball has everything from uniforms to sneakers and practice wear payed for by the school and all the cheerleaders get are partially funded uniforms, we pay the rest. Cheerleading needs to be put under title IX for not only medical reasons but for respect of the activity and the cheerleaders part of it.REPORT COMMENTS

Cheer is a competitive, power tumbling sport. Not other way around it. It should be recognized as such.REPORT COMMENTS

This sport has one of the highest rates of catastrophic injury, the reason no one is aware is because the lack of support cheerleading receives as and official sport.REPORT COMMENTS

I am appalled that a physical competitive discipline as strenuous, skill oriented, and potentially dangerous as cheerleading is not classified as a sport under Title IX. The injury statistics are worse than for any other sport, and this is precisely because of the absolutely lack of proper training protocols, safety procedures, emergency action plans, etc. The coaches are absolutely unqualified and for our government to let this continue is to let a private organization, Varsity, put our children in danger. Cheerleading is nothing if not a sport. Even varsity calls it a "sport" and enjoys the lucrative fees of the over 60 "national" competitions. I urge you act. Parents should not have to worry that their daughter is likely to suffer a severe brain injury, broken neck, or even death at cheerleading practice, let alone the competitions. In no other sport is the risk of catastrophic injury so high, and this is precisely because cheerleading is not seen as a sport.REPORT COMMENTS
