The investment weadequate to train these men and women will be lost as well. With Russia escalating and France and Germany growing military in response it makes no sense to get rid of these pilots and helicopters.

The Chief of the National Guard Bureau (NGB) leads more combat troops than any Active Duty general of comparable rank. Apaches are an important component of the Guards power projection and combat capability. That said I was overseeing building border fence on the US/Mexican border in the mountains of California. The Army took our Huey Medevac because the Active Duty Army was running out of Huey engines. They said just use a Blackhawk. There is a major cost difference between the per hour cost of having a Huey on station and a that of having a Blackhawk. In the end the Active Army got the Huey and we were left hours from any hospital with only an SF Medic and ground transport. I remember when President Reagan started breaking the stereotype of the National Guard being a place to avoid the Draft and thus avoid being sent to Vietnam. President Reagan pushed M1 Main Battle Tanks and Apache Attack Helicopters, etc. to the National Guard. Then there have been all those wars in the Middle East for decades and who has been doing the lions share of the deployments? Well it surely wasn't the Active Duty Army. I myself was called up out of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) on an Army mission. My first year in Iraq all the engineers around me were either US Navy, Marines, or US Air Force... They J7 would look around the room and ask 'Who's mission is this again?' It was the Army's and it was handled by everyone but the Army. The only two Army officers were the most junior officers present and both pulled out of the IRR. So the Active Army has been thin since 2008 and is about to be smaller than any time since World War 2. I think there is a lesson on what happened between WW1 and WW2 and how the US Army was not ready when war came. In 1941 we had Ocean's and great distance to help protect the US. Today those vast distances mean very little and we will not have the time to build up the forces as we have done in the past. I think these plans are political and based on unsound logic.
