Personally, I am going through the painful removal of a finger and lip tattoo in order to qualify for the military. I absolutely and one hundred percent understand that the placement of both those tattoos is more than just poor, especially since one of the two can't even be covered up in any kind of uniform. I have no issue getting them removed in order to come a step closer to my dream career. However, having developed a passion for the Marine Corps especially, I am also being held back by a 1/4 sleeve of a rose and a compass on my lower arm. It would be fully covered in uniform and is of no offensive, gang related, or sexual content, and yet I doubt that I would be able to get a waiver if not even someone as dedicated as Sergeant Knapp has gotten one. In conclusion, I do agree that tattoos shouldn't be excessive or of gang-related, sexual, or otherwise offensive content, but as long as they aren't visible in uniform, I don't see why it should hold a person back from giving their life for their country.

The tattoo policy should go back to no hands, neck, and head tattoos, and they must all be able to be covered by the long sleeve. # ready to join the corps family as soon as the tattoo policy is relaxed.

The USMC tattoo policy as it stands is backwards, limiting, and discriminatory. Tattoos don't hinder anyone's abilities. Please relax the tattoo policy.

Abolish tattoo policy completely. Congress shouldn't enact frivolous laws just for the sake of instituting policy. I would love for my husband to have a full sleeve but unfortunately he cannot due to policy. Please change that. Thank you.

No reason for good marines to be thrown out over tattoos

I was in the recruiters office getting all my information, when he noticed my tattoo of my sisters name on my forearm he sadly had to end the meeting and tell me I don't qualify over my tattoo. Let me just say its dream crushing that I can't serve for the Marines over some ink..

Becoming a United States Marine has been a dream of mine and I completely qualify if every aspect to become an asset to the USMC. However the tattoo policy is limiting my elegibily and dream due to the tattoo I have solely on my forearms "progress since 90" the Marine Corps needs to follow in the Army's footsteps pertaining to the growing and escalating issue. PLEASE listen our voices, as people that qualify 100% with appropriate tattoos that are willing to die for this country simply cannot due to the tattoo being slightly larger than my hand. PLEASE do something about this.

Tattoos do not define the character of a man or woman, it is there demeanor work ethic struggle selflessness and loyalty. In the end we sign a life long commitment at times up to our lives on the line let us express ourselves where not asking for much we still do our jobs and perform our duties and some of your finest bare marks that they chose to carry for the rest of there lives to remind them of what it is they have done to be recognized by those who would never think more of us allow us to demonstrate personal character without offending the uniform GOD BLESS AMERICA for I have Sworn an oath to defend her foreign or domestic
