The Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination needs to be eliminated. No need to reiterate what others have said. Its not fair.

I do not understand how it is fair to deprive someone of their social security benefits if they have met the requirements, regardless if they have worked outside of the system. What is fair about taking spousal benefits away from a hard working couple, just because a husband or wife worked as a teacher? We all know people that draw two pensions and are not disqualified or punished by social security. Please repeal WEP/GPO and give people what they contributed to.

To be punished for having a pension is just not fair. My husband and I both work for the government and will draw a pension at retirement. Social Security is punishing us for having a pension. We both worked other jobs and earned social security.

It has always seemed unfair to me that in individuals who have earned a government pension and their spouses receive less of a social security benefit than what they earned throughout their work life. If a person worked in government long enough to earn a pension, they are not likely to have paid social security taxes long enough to earn much of a social security benefit in any case. So, why reduce that benefit any further? Also, most government pensions are not adjusted sufficiently to even nearly keep pace with inflation, resulting in an erosion of the buying power of those pensions pretty quickly after retirement. Finally, if the social security benefits earned by private sector workers are not reduced if those workers also earned a pension, why are pensioned public sector employees' benefits reduced?

Social Security Advisory Board should be publishing a POSITION PAPER on the GOVERNMENT PENSION OFFSET....and the harmful effects it causes for widows...by the end of this year! Just as BRADY has said...TIME TO CORRECT THE MATH FOR WEP...the SSAB....should be documenting that it's TIME TO CORRECT THE MATH FOR WIDOWS!!! WE EARNED AND DESERVE OUR SURVIVOR BENEFITS!!! I asked NEA lobbyist...Al Campos...questions about GPO....and he couldn't answer my questions !!! I have paid NEA union dues for 25 years! I need to know about the 60 months exemption for GPO. Supposedly...if you work the LAST 60 MONTHS...IN A POSITION THAT PAYS INTO SOC SECURITY...AND THE JOB IS IN THE SAME RETIREMENT SYSTEM....YOU CAN BE EXEMPTED FROM GPO . Has anyone tried this? What do you know about GPO....that I don't know ????? Oh----Pat Toomey (Penn) supports S 3303....but it would ONLY REPEAL...WEP & GPO....FOR POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS. WHY DOESN'T S 3303...INCLUDE HARD-WORKING TEACHERS......ESPECIALLY WIDOWS ??????? There's suppose to be a law...that all new teachers in Missouri...are suppose to SIGN A PAPER....stating that the SCHOOL DISTRICT...has INFORMED THEM ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY...AND THE 2 LAWS....WEP & GPO. I just asked a NEW TEACHER....if she signed her paper....SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT! I personally don't think the LAW is being followed. I know NEA....NEVER TALKS ABOUT WEP & GPO!!! Whenever I tell someone about these 2 LAWS.....they don't believe me! My Fnancial Planner and Tax advisor....were completely unaware of WEP & GPO !!!

Please repeal the WEP. I do not understand why I am ineligible to receive the SS benefits I earned through a second career and extra jobs. It is difficult to believe that I will never receive spousal benefits just because I was a teacher. Why I'm I being punished for teaching? I taught for 30 years and mostly in a Title 1 school. I'm not asking for anything I don't deserve! Or for anything I did not pay into! And how is it fair that I would not ever see a spousal benefit?Unbelievable and very disturbing to me. I'm so worried about my future!! Please help! Make this fair! If a person has paid into SS- they should get what they've earned and spousal benefits to boot. Please help us!!! Quit punishing us!

I paid into Social Security and am unable to draw benefits because I was a government employee and fall under the GPO. This ruling is most unfair especially when I see who the money I contributed is going to and what it is being spent on.

WIDOWS NEED HELP NOW! Kent Conrad and James Lockhart....think that Soc Security should be MORE FAIR to Widowed Women! Conrad thinks widowed women should GET THEIR OWN BENEFITS and 3/4 of their DECEASED SPOUSE'S BENEFITS! This model for Soc Sec would keep Widowed Women OUT OF POVERTY!!! REPEAL: WEP & GPO for Widowed Women WHO TEACH IN MISSOURI! Tell Congressmen to PASS: HR 973 & S 1651. OR....Time To Correct the MATH FOR WEP....per Kevin Brady's HR 711.

I paid in Social Security for almost 30 years before teaching in the State of Georgia for 10 years. Because social security was not paid in during my tenure as a teacher, my SS was penalized 40%! How can this be fair? Please do all that can be done to pass the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision.

This law unfairly discriminates against the very people who also served their country through public service. We worked very often at a considerably less salaries than in the public sector, only to have the money we paid into the Social Security program taken from us. As a teacher we expected less in salaries and to deal with a public that felt we should do so for altruistic reasons take paltry salaries. The government calls SSI an entitlement as if it is a gift from the government. WE WORKED AND PAID FOR IT and it is a slap in the face to someone who got up every day and worked. Not alloting it to us is tantamount to theft of earned wages. Even more disheartening is finding out that while was I working sometimes two jobs to get by plus losing time with my children, that people who made poor choices with alcohol and drugs thus destroying their health are collecting disability benefits possibly higher than they would have otherwise received. They also get medical/health care. I cannot even afford Obama care. I am not asking for nothing more that what I earned with my payments.

It is unfair that the WEP program makes retirement even more difficult. Bad enough that when you retire you are already taking a cut is pay. Get rid of WEP we have earned it.

Doesn't this qualify as a "taking without just compensation"? How can you reduce a federal benefit based on a state benefit that was fully employee funded?

I am a retired nurse from the state of Nevada receiving a pension. I am unable to receive the benefits from Social Security that I should be entitled to for myself or for spousal benefits. Because of the Windfall Elimination Provision, my benefit has been whittled down to $39/month. I am hopeful that this provision can be repealed so that I can receive the money I worked for and am entitled to receive.

I have worked for the state government for 15 year paying into social security. This year I was reclassified into a classification that does not contribute to social security. As a result, my benefit at retirement for the 15 years I contributed will be severely reduced. How is that fair? I feel like I made a mistake working for civil service. Why would any young person want to work for the government if this is the kind of treatment they can expect?

In 1986 when the GPO was put not effect I had already invested 20 years into my government job and had always counted on receiving social security along with my government pension that I had paid for. I felt then and I feel the same today that this was an unfair targeting of federal employees. My husband who had paid into social security for all of his working years passed away at age 65. I have not been able to collect his social security as his widow ! This is unjust !

The GPO provision is very unfair for widows and widowers. When a spouse who collected social security dies, it is a heavy financial burden on the surviving spouse. The decisions they made when retiring was based on their dual retirement incomes. Then when a spouse dies and the surviving spouse who is a federal retiree cannot collect the survivor benefit, it usually has a direct effect on the surviving spouse's future situation. Many spouses find they cannot stay in their homes after the social security- covered spouse dies becaus of their reduced income. The spouse is forced to change their lifestyle and possibly move at a time in their lives when it is very difficult to start all over again. The other point that makes this very unfair is the fact that many of us started before the GPO came into effect. Our contract with the Government when we started said nothing about a pension offset. Therefore this offset should not affect those of us who started working for the Fed before the policy came into effect.

As an adult, I worked in the business world. I married and was married for 18 years. After my divorce, I became a teacher. I don't understand why I am being denied earnings that I would have received prior to my becoming a teacher? If I had known, I would never have become a teacher. This law needs to be revoked as it definitely discourages people with prior business world experience from becoming any kind of educator. What do we need to do to get this done?
