I've been punished for 30 years. I pay my taxes and I have had no problems with the law in all these years. Please pass this bill. -

When I saw this on the news I was very excited One of my sons made some bad choices, but I am so very proud of him today. He served his time, paid his fine and has totally turne his lilfe around. He has a very good career, is married and a wonderful Father. Just as our sins our forgiven when we repent so should the mistakes that have been paid for be wiped out for those that have turned there lives around and are productive, responsible citizens.REPORT COMMENTS

I had made a mistake when i was 21 and completed my sentence and paid all my fines. I had the opportunity to go through a second chance program that landed me a decent job which i have been working for the past 8 years and have been able to make it a career. I have since earned my associates degree in business and am currently working on my BA. I would like to have the same opportunity as state offenders to receive my rights back as a US citizen.REPORT COMMENTS

I was convicted 9 years ago (in my mid 20?s) of a non-violent, alcohol related felony. Since then I?ve given up drinking and have an entirely different outlook. I?ve had an extremely difficult time finding gainful employment despite the fact that I?m almost done with a master?s degree. I?ll soon be responsible for paying back student loans, and I?ve had an offer rescinded because of the background check. I?ve also been pulled from consideration during the final interview for several jobs after an attempt to explain what they would find on the background check. I, like so many others, don?t qualify for expungement under the current laws. Even with the high unemployment rate, there?s an enormous lack of skilled workers in the US. Barring non-violent past offenders from the workforce is not the answer. These are citizens who are still being punished long after they paid their debt.REPORT COMMENTS

If the purpose of the Justice system is to punish the first time offender to a point that makes it very difficult to ever become a law abiding citizen again than this bill is not needed but if we believe that everyone deserves a chance to prove that they made a mistake and want to return to being a law abiding and productive citizen than it is time to pass this bill.REPORT COMMENTS

People make mistakes in life. For those with criminal mistakes, we suffer enduring punishments beyond those imposed by courts. Lifelong labels such as 'felon' or 'sex offender' prevent rehabilitated American?s from contributing to society and living happy lives. At some point, we must look at empirical evidence of gains vs. losses in imposing the scarlet ?F? or ?SO? on former convicts and help those people better themselves. Not all felons are career criminals and everyone deserves a fresh start. Please spread the word about the Fresh Start Act of 2011 and support this endeavor.REPORT COMMENTS
