I wish we would subsidize solar with the same desire we do oil companies! Take care of our home first.

If the mall can be used to host the likes of Glenn Beck and Jon Stewart, pundits who rile up the populace without a clear purpose, then it is absurd to think that the same patch of grass cannot be used to support and learn about practices that will inevitably lead to not only "winning the future" but ensure that foreign oil does not become the demise of the United States.

Renewable energy and home efficiency represent two of the leading edge initiatives in United States. We should support this endeavor to provide American jobs, to clean up our environment, and to ease taxpayer burdens. We should be displaying those efforts prominently and promoting them vigorously, not hiding and ignoring them.

The Solar Decathlon allows the general public to see the newest ways of using solar energy, which is good for the home owner who wants to bring energy saving ideas to his home. The Mall, with easy metro access, is a perfect location to display solar-powerd homes.

If the lawns are the concern, take advantage of the offer by the landscape architecture students and faculty to come up with some solutions. 2011 is too late to tell folks it is to be somewhere else.

Pretty sure these kids built their houses over the past two years being under the impression they would be on the Mall. Pretty sure they probably went around raising money by telling companies their products would be on the National Mall. Pretty sure the "grass" on the National Mall was never alive to begin with. As a student who has participated in the past, if this news was dropped on me, I would have quit. Without the Mall, there is no point.

This move clearly indicates less than full support of efforts to encourage energy conservation.

My firm, HOK, is a sponsor of the team from Massachusetts. As Architects and Engineers who are deeply involved with issues of sustainability, I find this development deeply troubling. We need to inspire the next generation to solve these problems, not discourage them. This decision sends a clear signal that energy efficiency is not an issue of national importance at exactly the moment it should be.

This is one of the most interesting events held on the Mall. My parents and I discovered it by accident one of the first summers I lived in the DC area and we just LOVE it! It can't be held anywhere else in the DC area and get the same kind of traffic and interest. Rework the competition to include plans for the competing schools to repair their section of the Mall and leave it better than they found it. Especially since we all know Park Service talks a good game about repairing the Mall but never seems to have the funds.

We're not competing this time, but we did in a previous competition, and it's too late for teams to redesign now. Leave the competition on the Mall and save rethinking for the 2013 competition, if you must relocate at all!
