Depending on the crime and why the crime was committed should determine the severity of the sentence. I have a friend that has been in jail for over 20 years for protecting his family member. He should be released. He has learned his leasson and wants to start over.

"To reduce recidivism among those we touch." That's what is displayed under "OUR MISSION" on the ODRC website. If that is truly the mission and the agency is doing as well as reported in the 2015 annual report, why are we seeing the parole board tell everyone with a life sentence that comes before them to come back in 10 years!? Give these people a chance. Many have been there since they were kids and they are now grown with a completely different outlook on life. That is what happens when we all grow up, right. I honestly never thought I would feel so strongly about this but I have done my research and changes need to be made. Why give a 25 to life sentence if serving 25 years isn't going to at least be considered as enough time served? That's the way it comes across, like the parole board doesn't even look at the person that the inmate has become..... the person they are in the very moment that thy are standing before them. People grow, people change, and that's what the parole board needs to do as well.

Please check the recidivism rate for lifers. First term, young lifers, should not be doing life in prison. They deserve a second chance. All young lifers acted with an undeveloped mind and most acted under the influence of substances. We need to watch what we are doing with these kids 25 and under. Prison breeds hate and mental problems. Let's fix this broken system by giving our kids real hope.

Lifers have undergone a life change and self-examination few of us in the free world can understand or endure. We are now in danger from the stranger at the store than from a paroled lifer. They have repented and reformed and are ready to contribute to society. Those who understand this process and work with these lifers will continue to help them in their return to society. Because we understand that anyone is redeemable and because we choose not to spread fear and hatred, but to understand and be understood.

Please let lifers with the opportunity to parole, to actually parole when they come up for parole hearing. Help bring justice to inmates and be a voice for them. Some deserve a second chance.

I believe for those that have truly be rehabilitated and pass psychological evaluations, have done everything asked of them, have served their time and are in good standing with the correction facility should be given a second chance to prove themselves in society
