Front Label Act

Messages Sent So Far
A recent study by the CDC (http://bit.ly/MVQ7kZ) shows the direct correlation between added sugar intake and mortality.

Please introduce the bill proposed below to ensure that all food products with added sugar, including baby formula, must display a large label on the front of the package, warning of the risks associated with added sugar and stating the number of teaspoons of sugar in the entire package. This is in addition to existing serving size labeling requirements.

It will effectively make the public aware of this critical health issue and save lives. Thank you for your consideration on this urgent and meaningful issue.

A BILL
To amend the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Labeling Guide (last revised January 2013) so that all food products with added sugar must include a large label on the front of the package warning of the risks associated with added sugar and the total amount of added sugar in each package.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the ?Eradicate Childhood Obesity by Raising Awareness of the Risks Associated with Added Sugar.?

SEC. 2. REQUIRING THE FOOD INDUSTRY TO INDICATE LEVEL OF TOTAL ADDED SUGAR ON THE FRONT OF EVERY PACKAGE.
REQUIREMENT. All products in the food industry must have ?Added Sugar? labeling on the front of the package, in addition to existing serving size labeling requirements. The U.S. Surgeon General will endorse this labeling. Each label will indicate how much Added Sugar is in every food and drink product sold in the United States. If a product has added sugar in it, it will display a black and white label stating the number of teaspoons of sugar in the entire package, including, but not limited to, a can, bottle, or carton. Processed foods with no added sugar will display a green and white label stating that the product has 0 teaspoons of added sugar. The FDA will enforce these labels as a requirement for all products containing added sugar and processed food with no added sugar.

SEC. 3. ADVERTISING
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will create a campaign to promote the new labels and educate the citizens of the United States of America about this new proposed labeling, expressing its importance to our nation's health. Approximately six months before the labeling becomes mandatory, the USDA will introduce its campaign and familiarize the public with both the black and green labels.

SEC. 4. IMPLEMENTATION.
This act shall be implemented no later than 2 years after it is passed in Congress and will be financed by the USDA. The advertising campaign will begin six months before the label goes into place so that consumers become aware of the labels that will be on their food.

Sincerely,

Signed. This is a necessity. Europe does this, and the only reason we do not is due to the Sugar companies paying off Congress in the late 60's.

This is a way to help us combat childhood obesity--easy to see, understandable for children. We MUST do something NOW. This is what needs to be done.

Not everyone has the luxury of taking the time to understand complicated and misleading food labeling. I understand that I am privileged to have this background and time.

Even people who know sugar is dangerous make unwise decisions every day because food labels are misleading. Honest, easy to read labeling on food is a primary step in ending the obesity crisis in this country.
