Reimbursement for Radiation Therapy has already been significantly cut over the past 3 years. The cost to outfit a facility with new equipment to deliver the highest quality outcomes is now over $3,000,000.00. Other costs associated with running a cancer center also continue to rise. These costs include payroll, health insurance for employees and medical supplies. We can not sustain the delivery of high levels of care by being squeezed from both ends. It is imperative to view this from the patient's standpoint, and that is that they will have to drive further distances every day for up to 45 days to reach facilities with the most modern equipment only to wait in line because that's what everyone else is doing. Is that the way we really want to treat these patients? I hope not.REPORT COMMENTS

Reduction in reimbursement for radiation therapy services are largely the result of the arbitrary application of diagnostic imaging standards to the treatment of cancer patients. The March 2009 Medicare Payment Policy Report to Congress determined that imaging centers typically operate high-cost imaging equipment at 90% of capacity rather than 50% of capacity as previously assumed. This 90% capacity factor has been arbitrarily applied to radiation therapy services resulting in drastic reductions in the proposed reimbursement for the treatment of cancer patients. These reductions will undoubtedly result in the closure of many cancer treatment centers and bring a virtual halt to new developments. Patient access to these vital cancer treatment services will clearly be affected if cuts to 2010 Physician Fee Schedule are enacted as currently proposed.REPORT COMMENTS
