Used to live in Philadelphia, PA and once myself at the age of 19 was on welfare and I would stand in line and hear them talking about the drug dealer across the street waiting for their money and how they were getting more....I think this country wouldnt be so much in debt if they would stop giving welfare to those who dont deserve it and shorten the time they let people have it as I was only on it for two to three years I went to school and got off of it as my grandfather said not to be ashamed because it was his hard earn tax money I used some of these are families that all have been on welfare for generations or never worked in the USA so how can they have the right to collect something when them or no one in their family has ever contributed kinda crazy if ya ask me.........

They should also be doing some kind of community service work to earn the benefits.

I think the whole Welfare system should be reformed. I would rather subliment someones income with goverment help while they are still working than them sitting at home watching a million kids living on the system. As a mother we all want to stay home with our kids, but financially alot of us have to work.

Where can I see more information about S.97? It is just drug testing for TANF? I get so frustrated with the system sometimes I have applied for TANF before, because my kids father doesn't pay his child support and me and my boys were struggling, but did not get it because I work. Which is crazy that we would promote this thinking we will pay your way as long as you don't work but families that are trying and are working are not eligible, I don't understand. The system is majorly flawed I see too many people who don't work and live off the system their whole lives and the ones who work and struggle every day living paycheck to paycheck fall through the cracks. If we keep enabling the people who take advantage of the system they will never better themselves why would they, they are getting a free ride. There has got to be a solution a way to ensure people are not taking advantage of the system better screening, being able to recognize habitual users if you have been on welfare for years there is a problem it is not doing what it is meant to do and that is to help you help yourself to get on your feet get through a rough time not to support you and your family the rest of your life. Another crazy thing is for food stamps if you own a vehicle you might be asked to sell it before you qualify but I see lots of people on welfare driving Mercedes and BMW what does this tell you about our system that the person who is trying to be smart and buy and old clunker not trying to live above their means can't get assistance and the person who gets a car with a note depending on welfare to support them gets assistance once again I don't understand. Have you drove through the projects lately most of the "poor" drive nicer vehicles than me nice furniture (most from rental places. If you can't afford groceries how can you afford all these extras) they get their hair and nails done, but the taxpayers are paying for them. I know there is not a simple solution but there has got to be a way to monitor and weed out the ones who are taking advantage of the system.

I BELIEVE ALL RECIPENTS OF WELFARE SHOULD BE TESTED ON A REGULAR BASIS,THAT MIGHT MAKE SOME OF THEM THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY TRY TO GET A FREE RIDE I PERSONALLY AM TIRED OF TAKING CARE OF THE DOPE HEADS.

Enough is enough! No more cash handouts. Figure out a better system for welfare. If it means tighter regulation...then do it! This country is broke, I wonder why. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

We all have seen cases of welfare abuse. I agree that drug testing should be across the board. People who work have to be tested to get their check so why not welfare. Their are also some very decent people on welfare who deserve to be helped but the abusers make it shameful for the deserving.

I have been in line at the store and watched someone pay for their food with money card (FOOD STAMPS)and then pay for thier buggy FULL of cases of beer with their paychecks. This is insane!!!!!!!!!!!! Drug and Alchol test the whole family over 18!!!!!!!! you won't have to do it long, and this will cut down on a lot and save alot of money.
