HOA's should illegal, period. In no way should someone who purchases a property be subjected to the will of someone else. It's borderline unconstitutional and acts a pseudo-court system.

My HOA is terrible. Just a bunch of power hungry people with no actual education on property development or community planning to back up anything they do. Always telling us homeowners one thing and doing another. Fining hard working families for a few weeds or a small oil spot on the driveway, all the while their homes have more violations than anyone else in the community. HOA's are a waste of time and resources that could be used to bolster local and state tax revenues to provide the same, and often better, services than the associations provide.

HOA's are generally run by board members who are inept and sublimely stupid. They run amock high on power, citing select homeowners on issues like weed removal or parking your own damn car in your own damn driveway!! My HOA seems to pick on minorities with exorbitant citations. Just today i received a citation about weed removal. I did remove them 5 days prior to when the preaident of the board took the pic.. all i see is a flower sticking out!!?? Wherd are the weeds?? My board wants to change the CC AND R 's in order to limit how many homes can be used as rentals?? I think that is illegal..all because we have a few homes bought by chinese investors whp rent out the rooms to college kids.

My house is being taken from us do to outrageous. HOA unjustified assessment s that aren't warranted and seemingly I tried seeking help but each time I've tried my HOA added additional fee's that's thousands almost as much as buying a new car and the amount said to be owed is less then $2500 I don't know what or how we may save our family home we're seniors and we're not in the best of health we've put all our saving in our home and was current with our mortgage. And in our community there's no special enmities just grass and scrubs and our HOA just really started back watering and trimming the bushes. We need help. The HOA's were created to support and protect the home owner and not to destroy families and force them out of their home by assessing outrageous fee's I'm scared of speaking the truth I feel I'm being washed and don't know who to trust.

Hoa's are another form of regulation on the American public. Any issue that could possibly come up between the board and homeowner is already covered by they myriad of rules and regulations that federal, state, county and city governments place on an individual. HOAs are generally staffed by people who feel the need to control other people's lives and property. Unnecessary and given too much power by developers who have no stake in the place once they sell all the property.Disband or make them illegal and let us homeowners have the freedom we have all worked for

I know the reason for having HOAs. However I do not understand why people think they're necessary. HOA should be illegal. It is unjust to tell someone what they can and can't do with their private property.

The only value Homeowners Associations provide is another source of income for developers and lawyers. The fact that a person must either submit to a non-governmental organization's random rules in order to live where they choose is unconscionable. Developers, banks, and lawyers should be bared from establishing HOAs. If a group of homeowners want to make the decision to organize, that should be their right as private citizens.

The concept of an HOA is flawless. A group of people living in an area determine they want to keep their area looking nice. In order for the neighborhood to look nice roads must be paved, street lights installed, lawn maintenence, among a handful of other items. This concept works flawless, in fact this is similar to how the state and local governments operate. The issue occurs when the residents within an HOA feel that their freedoms are being taken away. HOAs can impose rules and regulations that are ridiculous and fine residents for not complying. To make matters worse, a majority of HOAs have leaders who micromanage, lacks common courtesy, and typically are power hungry. Do I belive HOAs need to be banned? Yes and No. Do I believe HOAs have too much power? Yes. I believe the ideal solution would be to limit the amount of power an HOA has. For instance, HOAs should not be allowed to create rules that clearly affect someone's home such as paint, gardening, how many cars you can own, etc. HOAs should be able to enforce rules such as no trash on the yard or keep your yard neat and trimmed, keep your house looking nice. They should not be able to specify what plants you can have, the color of you house, the creation of a patio or awning, etc. Individuals need their own personal space, their own castle if you will, and when you infringe on their rights of owning their castle, you add stress, anxiety, and bitterness to everyone in that neighborhood.

I am a hard working, 49 year old single male. I have a career job as a Water Treatment Plant Operator with the largest privately owned public utility in the US. I work rotating shifts, a lot of over-time, and pay all my bills on time. My credit is excellent, but because I have a single income, I cannot spend as much as I would like to on a house. With that said, looking at houses is becoming very frustrating. I see decent looking houses not far from me, but because of the outrageous HOA fees added on to the principal, taxes, etc. I cannot afford $1500 monthly mortgage payments! (unless I decide to stop eating, driving a car, and quit the gym) Someone told me the whole idea of the HOA was to keep the riff-raff out. Well I disagree, this can work either way. I have driven past $1M houses, that have junked up yards, and I know some of these houses, that the insides are just as bad! But these fees also keep good, clean-cut, hardworking people like me from moving into a nice, safe neighborhood. So now I have to move into a ghetto and try to sleep at night hoping no one steals my car?! I understand the HOA fees do (or do not) cover a multitude of things that go with the house, but at the same time, perhaps if not outlawed, then at least there can be a cap. I mean it doesn't cost must to mow lawns and snow plow driveways, except for possibly ramped up fees from landscape contractors. I just cannot see how some of these place can charge $500, $700 a month, and MULTIPLY that by the entire community! It's just really ashamed with what has become of this country, that a person cannot afford to live in the county where he grew up his entire life. Oh yeah, and then there are the silly rules that go with the outrageous fees :(

There are 5 homes in our HOA. The homeowners of the other 4 homes are related. They use the HOA to harass us and to extort money from us. They also stalk us via many forms of video surveillance and spread viscous rumors and lies about us in the small community so that we have to endure severe community harassment. All because we moved in from out of state due to a change of employment and purchased a home the neighbors in the HOA were going to buy together and then flip for a profit. Because we made an offer on the house (became a short sale) the house didn't go into foreclosure as the neighbors anticipated. They have wealth and influence in the community with real estate, law enforcement, post office, etc. (they have many community contacts being native to the town). We have tried to sell our house and I strongly believe they have conspired with the Real Estate Community in this state to prevent us from selling this house where we are surrounded by people causing us harm) The other homeowners in the "HOA," led by the President of the HOA who was also the land developer, have brought to life an HOA which was non -existent when we bought the house (only on paper as an HOA to "ensure that homeowners kept their properties decent -- although the house we bought looked and smelled like a deserted junk yard on the inside and out when we bought the property). The story we were told by the other homeowners was that the house we bought was rented out and turned into a animal rescue that housed over 22 dogs. The house was abandoned and very abused when we purchased it (where was the HOA when a "tenant had 22 dogs in the house and they knew nothing about it yet are aware of our every move). They have done some very evil things to us to where I am afraid to leave my home as it requires driving down a private community road on which I was already attacked and harassed several times. The behavior is nothing less than evil and now that they have us here, they are enjoying the power of destroying my life and conspiring with many others to do the same. This criminal behavior violates both state and federal law yet I can get no relief from the torment of others based on the malicious lies being spread about me. I am a disabled veteran and also a federal civil service employee who recently lost my job due to the extreme torment and harassment (psychological injury). The information I have shared here is only the tip of the iceberg on what I have been subjected to as a law-abiding citizen and veteran. I have no funds to financially defend myself, but I do have proof of my allegations if anyone has the funds and would consider helping we initiate an investigation and file charges against these relentless criminals.

I agree 100%. HOAs are such a scam! Don't buy a house that has an HOA. Protest against them. It does not cost tens of thousands of dollars each month to pay some company to mow the lawn. You don't need to pay hundreds of dollars each month to have an neighborhood agreement to match your housing style - just sign an agreement and penalize those who break it. If an HOA has any lawsuits against it, like bankruptcy, you'll have a way harder time refinancing and it may be impossible. HOAs suck and should be illegal. Let's do away with them and give ownership back to the people. It's already sickening that we settle for 30 years loans and add an HOA on top of that is a slap in the face to the American dream.

I appreciate all your gripes about how they try to control your lives; but I think you all might be missing the worst possible point of an HOA. The average HOA fee is about 200-400 dollars a month. This is horrible. Ohhh the public might say, well geez its not so bad... Well what do you get for that? Just for their edification: do the math. A $278/month HOA fee for the life of your 30 year loan adds $100,000 to the price of your home purchase!! That's it. Enter it into a calculator: 278 x 360 = 100080. And you don't get any of it back!! If you have 180 units in your development, and they all give 100k over 30 years that's 18 million dollars. Bull! These traps have to stop!! This is killing the American dream. I can't own my own home because I can't afford the HOA fee and the bank loan. When my loan is paid off, I have to keep working until drop dead so they don't take away my home. You guys want to crab about boats and storage and a motor home? Start complaining about the money. I don't want to be a slave to anything.

For example a nice shed or a childrens play set. The most ridiculous thing is I had to get approval to paint my house close to the same color it already was painted by the builders? HOAs need to go!
