We are being evicted by an HOA because they don’t like renters. We lived here for 5 years and never had a complaint from them. The HOA does not own our city owned streets, yet tried to make us pay for “parking decals.” I questioned why we now need them and they told me I cannot get them because I never turned in an application so I’m an “illegal renter.” I have a copy of the application I turned in (including the original cancelled check) and so their point is invalid. Yet they terrorize us by sending the police to my house to do a “welfare check” and the police documented it and aren’t coming because they now see what’s going on. HOAs need to be strictly controlled or made illlegal altogether!REPORT COMMENTS

All HOA's should be banned; They constitute a perpetual contract on property not owned by the HOA. If you cannot back out of or dissolve a contract, it should not be binding in the United States. In no other area of our lives do we allow a contract to be altered unilaterally without voiding said contract. Moreover, HOA's are not investors or trusts. They do not own the property to put it under contract, because none of the property belongs to the HOA. The rent-seeking of HOA is one of the most passively wicked schemes we allow to go on in our own neighborhoods and gives civil western society as well as capitalism and property rights a bad name. If we cannot render them illegal, we should at the very least, render it illegal for them to hold private property owners hostage in one-sided contracts. My HOA has ruined my life. I have never missed a monthly fee Nor have I been late. I have full equity in my property and since I purchased it 1.5 years ago I have been fined for every thing I had to pay an attorney to stop them foreclosing on my property They are only in it for the money. I have done nothing wrong except request they maintain and repair the common area. And it goes on and on and on The average age of board menbers is 81. This just does not affect people in expensive homes it also affects homeowners in lower income bracket that does affect a person Civil Rights under our Constitution. It takes advantage of uneducated people. HOA's and their developers/homebuilders along with this HOA industry are truly enriching themselves at the expense of all homeowners and no accountably to those homeowners. Far to many States and the legal system in those states along with each States laws do not offer Homeowners Bills of Rights in a Civil Court. This must change far to long as this business taken so much for so little and gain a huge profit while all these homeowners can not afford to even have a chance in a court of law on an equal level.REPORT COMMENTS

After getting harassed for damages done by Hurricane Irma and the association avoiding every one of their responsibilities I'm now fully convinced that everything horrible that you hear about HOAs is true. Due to an unbelievably scarce market we had no choice but to buy this home but now I'm beginning to regret it. It is time we address the fact that we as grown American adults deserve to be respected and treated as such. We did not complete the 12 grades of our schooling systems to turn around and feel like we must be micro managed in a similar manor. Not only do we not need this micromanagement, it should be absolutely ILLEGAL. HOA's are a broad and ignorant contradiction to what it means to be an American Citizen. Why would I want to contribute to a society that prides itself on its "freedoms", but then allows minor organizations like HOA's to tell you in the most communist fashion; that you are not allowed to do what you wish with your own land. How can we proudly salute the American flag when we have an oppressive entity like the HOA in power on American soil? Their reign has gone far beyond maintaining the quality of neighborhoods. For many homeowners it has become tyranny in our own private life. If we are abiding by city, county and state regulations then there should be NO other authority underneath to dictate our lives. It's over-structured. Give the maintenance control back to the city and have people pay an association fee to have the neighborhoods kept up. The HOA is a violation of the American Dream. HOA's are the worst entity to shove down an Americans throat. Dictating what a homeowner can and cannot do to their home- what kind of window coverings are allowed, whether or not security doors or 'Beware of Dog' signs are aesthetic to the neighborhood, getting approvals for backyard landscaping, limiting the number of pets in a home to two or three regardless of what is legal in the city or county to own, can't leave the garage door open, can't park in the driveway or street, can't have your company's vehicle parked where it can be seen, this bush is too tall, that tree is too wide, etc. etc., etc. Having liens put on the home because of a forgotten association dues payment. Threatening to foreclose because of unpaid astronomical fines- $100 PER DAY in some instances. Everything I have mentioned is something a homeowner has to fight an HOA on. Just simple living that most Americans without an HOA take for granted but for those of us in it have to live with- and I use the term 'live' very loosely here. In certain parts of the country a person cannot buy a new home without having to sign their life away to a board of directors- and in my case two because I have a regular HOA and a master. If the regular HOA isn't hassling the homeowners then the master HOA is. Home ownership is a dream of the American people but the HOA's manage to turn that dream into a nightmare. Get rid of the HOA's and cities and counties can take over the association dues to have the neighborhoods kept up. Call it an 'association tax' and collect what homeowners would pay to an HOA for association dues. It is time to abolish/dissolve/ban the HOA's and let us homeowners have our lives back!REPORT COMMENTS
