BAN LT. GEN. ABDEL FATTAH AL-BURHAN, THE HEAD OF SUDAN MILITARY COUNCIL FROM VISITING THE UNITED STATES

We strongly urge you to ban the head of Sudan Military Council (MTC), Lt. Gen. Al-Burhan from visiting the United States.
For nearly six months, the Sudanese people led peaceful demonstrations that were met by violence and death of nearly 100 civilians, most of them high school and college students. This uprising led to a sit-in that finally toppled Omar al-Bashir 30-year dictatorship. On April 11, the military sided with the people and a military transitional council took over pledging to transfer power to a civilian transitional government. Unfortunately, the MTC resisted such a transfer for fear of prosecution of Bashir regimen members, fear of prosecution of MTC own members and other reasons.

MTC is not recognized as a legitimate ruler of Sudan and has been urged to transfer power to a civilian government formed by the Declaration of Freedom and Changes Forces, an umbrella organization of opposition groups that led the uprising. This has been the position of the African Union, The European Union and the United States.

United States’ recognition of the MTC as the ruler of Sudan effectively abolishes the Sudanese people hopes for a democratic government and paves the way for the return of military dictatorship, oppression and corruption. We strongly urge you to stand by the people of Sudan and their struggle for democracy and freedom.
