And now you have to be on deployment for 365 days to qualify for R&R. But the DON has increased the amount of maternity leave.REPORT COMMENTS

My husband has a skill set that can be used in the civilian sector. I understand the cost of family leave for the military but I'm not convinced that it's more costly than training new personnel if people like my husband chose to leave the military. What's the incentive to stay? Is it worth damaging a family?REPORT COMMENTS

I just want to ask how would you feel if you where to be away from your family for more than months on end. Missing holidays special occasions! They fight for our freedom and they can't get a little RnR? My boyfriend is deployed and although he isn't on dangerous ground at any moment it can change. He has family who miss him very much. He will be missing every holiday! I don't think it's right to take something away from all the military men that deserve that time. It's unfair. What's most unfair is that they work 6 12 hour days and barley have any time to rest or ever make a simple phone call. They deserve the time with there family. It is bad enough they are away for so long.REPORT COMMENTS

My husband is being stationed in Bahrain for 1 year. Our daughter is only 4.5 months old. He is already going to miss all of her "first," the day she crawls, the day she walks, the day she says her first word. I am very disappointed that The Navy is cutting this program after my husband has dedicated 15 years and 7 deployments. Very sad.REPORT COMMENTS

I understand in times like this spending cuts need to be made. I can only imagine the price of all those plane tickets home for soldiers, but I have a hard time believing that this is a good idea and is OK for our leadership to decide on for our deployed soldiers. It makes me very sad that the leaders of our country have decided to move forward with this. I pray that our leaders will find another way to cut costs, perhaps taking the burden upon themselves, rather than placing it on the shoulders of those who already carry so much.REPORT COMMENTS

If the president and Congress can take vacations with budget and other fiscal crisis hanging over our heads, at least let the people who are actually risking their LIVES for our freedom (and the "right" for the pres. & congress to take weeks and weeks of paid vacations, in addition to their very high salaries, all the while spending their time with their families and mistresses) have a couple of weeks off in the middle of their deployment to rest, relax and maybe even see their family for a few days!REPORT COMMENTS

Our military men and women need R & R. Without it you will see dramatic increases in emotional problems which, in the long run, could affect the quality of our armed services. Besides that its just the right thing to do!REPORT COMMENTS

It is really tough to swallow seeing the rampant fiscal malpractice at work in our government on very frivolous things while we are getting our leave taken away. We were told in the first month here we would have it and great pains were taken to schedule accordingly. Family members were coordinated with, plans were made, people had something to look forward to which in itself makes the time go by easier for service AND family members. To be told 1/3 of the way into the tour with some people less than 2 weeks from leaving that it is being revoked because of fiscal matters (which is not addressed as a qualifying factor in ANY of the regulations I have researched) is a slap in the face. We will be paid for the leave on the tail end of the trip and that actually may cost the tax-payers more because it is tacked on as terminal leave, vs. being paid during the tour. So the argument about fiscal adherence is completely invalid anyway. I can't begin to tell you how demoralized this unit has become over this issue as it festered over the previous weeks and then reached this disappointing conclusion. Many of the Indiana signatures you see here are related to the same event.REPORT COMMENTS

Taking benefits away from those that defend your freedom is a slap in the face of all the military service members. We do not travel to foreign lands like you do. We are told when and where to go, and do not agrue. We just follow our orders. You go for a day or two(if at all) and then get to come home. We are our own security detail. You have personnel that pull security for you. We make less as a military member than we would in the civilian world. You make three to five times and rarely have to leave the safety of OUR country. We choose to do this job because we care about ALL amercians and their freedom. Please realize that your WORST day at work is better than our BEST day deployed.REPORT COMMENTS

These soldiers put their lives on the line for YOU every day, how do you think they don't deserve time to spend with their families? Can you imagine being away for that long with minimal contact and living in fear all the time? And this is how we thank them for that? Use your heads, people.REPORT COMMENTS
