My son Michael graduated from St. Gabriel's in 1983. I was very saddened to hear the news on NY1 that LaSalle/St. Gabriel's is closing its doors on 6/1/2011. I believe this school provides a very important foundation for students. The community drastically NEEDS this influence and it will be so unfortunate is this closing is actualized. The LaSalle School at St. Gabriel's located at 97th Street and Astoria Blvd. is a cornerstone of East Elmhurst, a largely Black middle class neighborhood. I am 58 and myself and others have been successful in our chosen careers. We came from families that chose to send us to this school to get a head start in life. The teachers and staff prepared us for life. Please do not close this institution.REPORT COMMENTS

St Gabriel's has helped so many children. It is morally wrong for the catholic church to close this school. The diocease should make every effort to keep this school open. It has affected countless lives in the many years it has been open. It would be ashame it were unable to provided a quality education to more children. From 1964 till 1973 St. Gabriel's was my world. As a child growing up between school n church I spent more time at St. Gabriel's than anywhere else. I made my First Communion there, I was Confirmed there, n it was there that I was tought 2 lead a good Christian life. In the years since my graduation I am sure it has done the same 4 countless others. Now while I understand that it may b differcult 2 keep the school running in the black I am not sure that our children's education should b run like a business. I think it would b a crime to close St. Gabriel's just because it is not making a profit.REPORT COMMENTS

I attended St. Gabriels school from 1965 thru 1969 and it was a fine school. I am sure it still is some 46 years after I attended it. The school serves a purpose of educating our children of the strong community of East Elmhurst. It should not be closed, it should be kept open. There is a will and a way should be found to keep this school open for the future generations that reside in East Elmhurst. It is my utmost desire for this school to stay open.
