This is awful. It's a vote in favor of ignorance and against intellectual freedom.REPORT COMMENTS

The recent actions by the House of Representatives to prohibit NSF from funding Political Science research and eliminate funding for the American Community Survey (ACS) are shortsighted dangerous. I urge you to act to insure that funding for Political Science Research and the ACS is continued. Political Science research yields a wealth of important insights as do the data collected by the ACS. The cost of these insights is tiny compared to their value. And the motivation for targeting these specific items is clearly political.REPORT COMMENTS

research funding is an investment like any other. some investments return obvious dividends and others don't. the dividends some investments pay are real but not obvious: but this is true of all science, not merely social science. if the honorable senator and his colleagues wish to reduce spending by reducing investment in science, let him propose an across-the-board reduction in such investment, rather than the more ignorant and partisan targeting of social science research specifically.REPORT COMMENTS

As a sociologist, I know the importance of having as much data on social behavior - systematically colllected - as possible to understand not only what is occuring at present but to use as an indicator of future actions. The lack of such insight in the past, for example the "surprised" reaction of the U.S. at the chaos in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, shows how important this research is.REPORT COMMENTS
