Although we may need to reduce research funding in general, it is reckless to prohibit all political science funding. -

We must keep ourselves informed as a public. Dedicated research on such important issues is nessisary, not optional.REPORT COMMENTS

Social science research, and judgments on its value, must exist beyond the reach of ill considered partisan attacks.REPORT COMMENTS

The prohibition on political-science funding makes no sense. The decision itself deserves study by political science. Next they'll ban study of evolution in biology.REPORT COMMENTS

The work funded by this provision of NSF is fundamental to the development of national and international policy and needs to be continued.REPORT COMMENTS

Please allow funding for political science research by the NSF. The idea that research is inherently partisan -- and therefore undeserving of funding -- is a preposterously ill informed perspective. Perhaps "ill informed" describes the goal current power holders have for our citizenry?REPORT COMMENTS

Political science research enables informed policy decisions, not to mention an informed citizenry. The benefits are massive and the expense small.REPORT COMMENTS

When I was a program officer at NSF, I had to respond to the hill when they challenged the legitimacy of some of the proposals we have funded. NSF is one of the only, if not the only, source of funding for basic science. Good science and innovation require risk-taking and it is important to have some space that is non-politicized. Even though titles may not seem to reflect important sources of inquiry, these investigations can often lead to important social and political insights. Do not restrict or cut this funding.REPORT COMMENTS

Jun 8th, 2012Someone from Elkins Park, PA writes:
Political science research and training funded by the National Science Foundation has helped policymakers to understand how democracy spreads and what positive effects it has, how terrorist groups organize and how to then target them, how foreign aid affects development, how and when economic sanctions are likely to be effective, how international organizations can be reformed to better serve nations, how campaigns and elections transform citizen interests, how inequality affects national stability, and many many other important political relationships. Social science, including political science, investment is just as necessary as investment in the physical sciences to improve our nation and our national security.REPORT COMMENTS

Withdrawing public funding from the social sciences is akin to our government issuing a gag order against any critical assessment of its own workings.REPORT COMMENTS
