I am not eligible to vote in the U.S., but I am wondering why governments would prefer to make less rather than more informed policy decisions. This decision would imply that the ACS is of so little value at the margin that $800 million can be disbursed w/o the information contained therein. I find this hard to believe. Apart, I have used ACS data for my own research.May 26th, 2012Someone from Charlottesville, VA signed.

Getting rid of the ACS won't itself limit the size of government spending... however, it will contribute to less informed--and therefore less effective--government spending. People of all political persuasions should recognize the need for empirically-based policymaking.REPORT COMMENTS

ACS data are critical for planning; Republicans and Democrats use ACS data. It is the most cynical brand of know-nothingness to cut funding for this program.REPORT COMMENTS

This survey has created data that has been invaluable to social scientists in terms of understanding how government programs work and has allowed us to achieve more efficient public policy. The loss of this survey would truly be a loss to all.REPORT COMMENTS
