Having moved from the Iowa to Texas, it has been shocking to see the loads of horses being taken to Mexico through Texas for slaughter. Eliminating slaughter in the U.S. hasn't saved any horses, it has just forced them to endure hours and even days crammed in a trailer to cross the border where they are killed with no regulation. Or even worse, to be left to starve to death or be dumped in remote locations with no care. If ever a law has back-fired, this is it. If only you could see the sad state that has been produced.Oct 20th, 2011Someone from Lewiston, UT signed.

The area where we live still has a wild band of horses, the community used to be able to help this band in the winter, but with feed prices going out of this world and no value to the equine on almost any market, this is not longer happening. Now it is very common to see domestic horses in with the "wild bunch". This is the result of folks unable to afford care for their equines, and/ or find homes, (or humanely utilize their animal). The domestic horse is not able to compete with a horse who has never be domesticated, and therefore die. They die a horrible, horrible death. We find their carcasses lying all over the trails we ride. You ask, "how do they now they are domesticated?" Well, they may have a halter on them, branded, and/or shoes! We breed for mules. When we 3-4 years ago was able to sell a weanling for 1500.00, now we are lucky to find someone to even give us enough for a ton of hay! And, we cannot be sure that the buyer can even afford to care for the animal we are selling! Scary!!! We pride ourselves in the quality of animals we raise, and now feel all our efforts, work have been in vain. But, again, because of the economy and nowhere to go with unwanted, unusable animals, what do we do with ours? We are barely making it for ourselves and providing for our herd, (as we will not let them starve, or turn them out!) it is a huge burden and stressful time. Thank you for your time and care in the well fare of these wonderful animals.REPORT COMMENTS

American horses that have unlived their useful lives, desire a humane end to their lives. Not starvation, pain, and death.REPORT COMMENTS

The horse is a special animal but they are just that an animal. Horse slaughter is necessary, just as mouse traps are. People see one bad picture and change legislation for the worse. I believe those cute little dog that the movie stars keep in their house all their lives should be able to run outside and roll in the corral mud! So lets make a law for that, too! Seriously, just let us manage our horse industry with processing plants.REPORT COMMENTS

equine slaughter done humanely is good and fair option for horse owners to utilize when the time comes to make that decision in the course of an animal's life. because of the size of the animals and the cost as well as that they are a renewable resource to feed other animals and humans. It could be considered a true way to recycle. While I realize Americans may not eat horsemeat American dogs, cats and carnivores in our zoos can and would. It needs to be regulated properly like other Usda inspected industries but this can be done. And it will help the jobs economy as well. It is a win win win for animals, owners, and our economyREPORT COMMENTS
