We are horse breeders who care deeply about the welfare of horses and feel the current legislation hurts rather than helps horses. -

I work for our local County Animal Regulations department and see the effects first hand the loss of this market has caused. We live in a free nation and allowing a minority of people to dictate how we are allowed to dispose of an excess of horses is a crime in and of itself. Return the humane disposal for unwanted or needed horses.REPORT COMMENTS

Horse slaughter needs to come back to put an unwanted horse out of its misery. People that don't want their horses to go to slaughter are not forced to send them there, they can keep their horses, nobody forces anyone to send a horse there but the people that have to do it have a way out and the horse dies lots easier than starving to death somewhere.REPORT COMMENTS

In an effort to be "do-gooders" the animal welfare activists actually did the horse a dis-service as a result of the un-intended consequences of the removal of an economically viable, humane way of disposing of aged and/or un-wanted horses. With the floor gone from the horse market, un-wanted horses were left to the mercies of nature or kind-hearted souls who took them in. This is but one of many examples of people with no grip on reality causing harm by the un-intended consequences of their actions. Shame on USDA and Congress for not recognizing this for what it would become.REPORT COMMENTS

Restoring humane slaughter is quite needed! I get calls daily and emails of unwanted horses, starved, emaciated, dead in pastures. Rather than the suffering of these creatures, they need to go to feeding another culture.REPORT COMMENTS
