For many this is a matter of life or death. It should not be bound who can live in good health by what they can afford to pay for that life.

I am a Type 1 diabetic, have been for 25 years. I have seen the price of Humalog go from $40 a bottle in the 1990s to over $300 today. My insurance company is raising deductibles so they won't have to pay as much, so I am now on the hook for $900 a month until I hit my deductible. If I don't take my insulin properly, I will die. This is the EXACT same drug that I took in the 1990s starting shortly after I was diagnosed. I used to have a $10 copay for a 3-month supply, or $40 a bottle if we didn't run it through insurance. That's now going to be a $2000+ copay (yes, two THOUSAND dollars) per three months, until I hit my deductible. How anyone thinks this is OK is beyond me. It's inhumane, unacceptable and unsustainable. An American should not have to worry about being able to afford life-saving medicine. Without insulin, I will die rather quickly as my blood sugar skyrockets and my organs shut down. Additionally, conditions such as kidney failure (transplant) and disability due to blindness or stroke are costly to the American government, corporations and insurance companies, and could be avoided through proper blood glucose management. In order for people to be able to manage their blood glucose properly, the drugs need to be available and affordable. Insulin has been on the market for nearly 100 years. Every other drug that has been on the market for this length of time has a generic alternative that is affordable to most. There are affordable drugs to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, but not blood sugar. Type 1 diabetics must take insulin subcutaneously as our bodies cannot produce insulin, and therefore the generic, affordable treatments for Type 2, which encourage the body to either properly produce its own insulin, or to utilize its own insulin better, will not work to treat us. The insulin situation in the United States is shameful and embarrassing. Especially considering that the reason Banter sold his insulin patent for $1 so that a life-saving drug would be affordable and accessible to all who needed it. Good job on that.

My insurance co has decided to only cover humalog at the reasonable copay price but humalog doe not work effectively formme so I need to get a Prior Authorization and then pay a much higher cost tier price just because some people in suits decided not to cover my life saving drug therapy.

I have been recently diagnosed at age 61 with Type 1 diabetes which is rare but happens. The pharmacy tells me that my insulin retails at $1,400 for a 3 month supply. That is insane. I am lucky to have insurance, but even with insurance it is $600 for a 3 month supply. How can people afford this, especially the elderly? Please do something to reduce costs. Also, why can't genetics be developed?

I have several friends who are diabetic and complain about the cost of insulin. It is not right that pharna can charge what they want because it's a life or death.

Earlier this year, in the month before I met my deductible, I paid $800.00 for my 14 year old daughter's one month supply of insulin. In Canada, the same amount of money would pay for more than a six month supply. This discrepancy reflects corporate greed at the expense of our nation's families. Is it any wonder why our nation's health care costs are so high?

The costs for insulin are very outrageous. I have been a Type 1 diabetic since I was 10. I have been quite lucky with my health but there are times where I had to improvise and get creative in the past just to make it to the next week. I am single and currently only have to take care of myself but I cannot even the imagine the struggle people must be going through who have families and children to take care of and have to make these large payments.

We select insurance policies based on a good faith expectation that they will cover crucial medications, like insulin, at a particular cost. Then, the insurers change their policies and we, their customers, are trapped, struggling with these new burdens, until another "open enrollment" season comes along and we are allowed to struggle to find another, less greedy option, We should have the option to SWITCH INSURERS any time they make a material change in our coverage like this, just as if we'd had one of the other "Life Change" events. Perhaps if they feared losing us due to their greed and bad faith, they might hesitate to hike costs so heartlessly. Or perhaps they will be more motivated to reign-in their PBMs' greedy practices. Give SOME measure of marketplace power back to the patients!

Why is no one in the public eye speaking out about the rising cost of insulin? Where is the outrage? I can tell you it's with the people who have diabetes and their families who struggle to get money to pay for a medication that has been here for 100 years but is now suddenly so expensive people cannot afford it. Something has to be done! Please! For the lives of all diabetics and their families. Lower the cost of INSULIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
