For President Obama: I am grateful for the commutation of sentence you granted to many prisoners before you leave office. Yet I am deeply saddened not to see the name Leonard Peltier among them. This man who is now a Lakota elder of 71 years has been imprisoned for so long that the great many of us who believe he is innocent despair that he will ever know justice. He has become a symbol not only for the Lakota people but for all Native Americans and allies- a symbol for Native American sovereignty scorned by our nation, and for the great dignity a man can bear for a generation even while he lives generations behind bars. Over the course of 40 years, tomes have been dedicated to the disgrace of justice done by our federal agencies, not only in his trial but in coercing the sole so-called eye-witness to testify and not allowing retraction, to this man and his people. Mister President, I respectfully challenge you to find one word ever written about his guilt that is not laden with doubt beyond reason. Amnesty International has recommended for over a decade- that Mr. Peltier be released. I know because this is how long I have been waiting for his freedom. He has not been treated well for the duration of his sentence and his health is deteriorating so rapidly. You have brought hope to so many, who feel your leaving office is like a light going out. What hope does Leonard Peltier have after the next administration begins? But the hope his freedom would bring to Native Americans in this country would be immeasurable. Please, please sir take the time to read even a few words on this man- perhaps Amnesty International?s page on him- and grant Leonard Peltier clemency. Thank you.REPORT COMMENTS

Leonard should be freed. His conviction was very questionable to say the least. He is old and in poor health. President Obama must grant clemency now or he will die in jail for something he did not do.REPORT COMMENTS

Leonard Peltier was convicted based on fake evidence and coerced testimony that was later recanted. Now the Prosecuting Attorney James Reynolds has sent a letter to President Obama agreeing that Leonard Peltier should be released. The gross injustice of 40 years of incarceration as a political prisoner needs to end!REPORT COMMENTS

Come on, this has been ridiculous, Leonard was used as a scapegoat and he has been a political prisoner, he is innocent and he needs to be free to enjoy his old age years with his children and grandchildren, enough is enough, let him free already like it should have happened decades ago. Come on Obama, you said you had the Native American's back, you are nowhere to be seen now, stay true to your word, this would help your anemic legacy.REPORT COMMENTS

Leonard Peltier has spent the past 40 years living in a cage for a crime he did not commit. He didn't receive a fair trial and the FBI withheld ballistic evidence and tampered with witnesses. It is time to let justice prevail and Free Leonard Peltier!REPORT COMMENTS

The continued incarceration of Leonard Peltier is a miscarriage of justice. Considering the unlawful acts of the FBI to extradite Mr. Peltier from Canada, considering the hostility of the presiding judge to disallow ballistic evidence which would have cleared Mr. Peltier of charges that he shot and killed two agents and considering the time already served and the poor health of Leonard Peltier, justice would be best served if clemency was granted by you, President Obama. We urge you to sign as your final act for justice and humanity, freeing Leonard Peltier.REPORT COMMENTS

I am very saddened that Mr PELTIER is continuously not on the lists to be pardoned! Why is this in 2016? We feel like Trump will pull us back in time yet equally this GOOD man is imprisoned for nothing! He's served far more time than he should have and why is he still serving???!!!! This has always been a clear injustice and how can this country be healed when acts like these go on with so much shame yet it is unsympathetic and determined to keep punishing the red man for STANDING UP FOR WHAT LITTLE WE HAVE LEFT AND STILL KICKED AROUND. It's WRONG!REPORT COMMENTS

President Obama I want to ask and pray that you find it in your heart to please, as you retire your position in the presidential office, to free Leonard Peltier from prison. He is a respected elder among our native people that has served a significant amount of time behind bars for being wrongly accused of a crime that wasn't proven accurately in the court of law. Someone had to pay the price and I believe he has paid well over that price. There are people that have committed way worse crimes in this country since his imprisonment that have been released from prison. I beg of you to free him so that he can spend what little time he has left on this earth with his family. This would be a very uplifting time to do this with what's going on among our native people and the pipeline in North Dakota. Turning a negative into a positive would be the right thing to do especially for our young native children who are growing up in this world. When I was young I heard the stories about what happened during all those unfortunate events and did research as well. My heart was sad for all those involved but, brought anger to my heart of how my native people were treated and frowned upon by many and for what? Disrespected and not acceptable by what my generation and generations before me call the white man's world. Break this cycle of anger for the generations to come so that we can become one with eachother, see eye to eye, begin to heal. I believe that It takes something big, positive and great to let go of the pain from the past and begin a new relationship with one another. so I pray and ask you to please Free Leonard Peltier.REPORT COMMENTS
