I agree.....why are first time homebuyers in 2009 exempt from paying this back while those who bought a home in 2008 are still required to pay it back!! My husband and I bought our home in 2008 and got the credit for repairs, etc., we sold our home in 2016 and now the IRS wants the rest of the credit back which means we will owe the IRS this year on our tax return!!REPORT COMMENTS

I am now dealing with the IRS who cant seem to track properly our payback each year with out taxes and now that we sold they cant seem to figure out what we owe or not! Awesome...REPORT COMMENTS

I concur. It is NOT FAIR that because I bought my home in 2008, that I have to pay back and those that bought in 2009 or later do not. What is so special about 2008 that it has to be repaid?REPORT COMMENTS

I don't think it's fair that I have to pay this credit back, when someone who purchased a home just months after me, plus received more than I did, doesn't have to pay! Once it was decided for 2009 purchasers not to have to pay, they should have retroacted it for 2008 homebuyers!! And we should be reimbursed for what we've paid this far!! President Trump, please help!!REPORT COMMENTS

This is so unfair for me, my ex-husband did our taxes and was ecstatic we were getting a $7,500 first time home buyer credit and I trusted him, BIG MISTAKE. We got divorced a year later, he failed to tell me he was a sex addict and liked young girls, and I kept the house and got a bill in the mail for the tax credit.......REPORT COMMENTS

This angers me every time I work on my taxes! The fact that $500 is taken out of my income tax return to pay off this loan, while a friend of mine, who purchased their home in 2009 (four months after I purchased my home) doesn't have to pay it back, is so wrong. Either all who've taken the credit must pay it back, or none of us should pay it back.REPORT COMMENTS

I, like so many other people got the tax credit in 2008 and have to pay it back. Then the government turn around and give a tax credit in 2009 that was 500.00 more to first-time home buyers and it doesn't have to be paid back.I feel this is unfair and we shouldn't have to pay it back and I should get the money back that I have already paid in.REPORT COMMENTS

I, like so many who have signed this, feel that this is ridiculous. I purchased my home in October 2008 and if I would have waited three more months the credit would have been "free". Not only should this be forgiven, the $3000 that I have paid over the past few years should be reimbursed. A travesty...REPORT COMMENTS

This doesn't help the need for which it was given. It is absolutely ridiculous. And the most frustrating thing is on page one of the Instructions for Form 5405 the third heading says, "Reminder: Homes purchased after 2008. If you purchased your home after 2008 and you owned it and used it as your main home for at least 36 months, beginning on the purchase date, you don't have to repay any of the credit or file Form 5405. We bought our home in October 2008. So if we had just waited three more months, we would have been eliminated in this repayment. Please help us to lift the burden of this homebuyer credit. We thought this was going to be a helpful thing to our family when we took it, and didn't realize the overwhelming burden it would be, especially knowing those after us were given the same credit with basically no strings attached. PLEASE HELPREPORT COMMENTS

Please eliminate the requirement to pay back the 2008 1st time Home Buyers Tax Credit. Ideally additional relief/ tax break/ refund should be provided for those who have been paying back this credit for the last 6 years considering 2009 and 2010 1st time home buyers were not required to pay this back.REPORT COMMENTS

This needs to be forgiven. It makes no sense why people who purchase their house in 2008 received less money had have to repay when people who purchased in 2009 don't have to repay. Give us 2008 people a break you've already been collecting for the last 6 years just forgive it already especially when we sell our homes.REPORT COMMENTS

Please eliminate the payback for the 2008 Tax Credit or at least eliminate having to pay back the remaining balance when/if you sell your home. This home buyers credit should put a financial burden on people when the 2009 credit was completely free.REPORT COMMENTS
