There are so many mental illnesses out there, aside from the obvious ones advertised on TV (depression, schizophrenia, etc.) Help these people if you can. If someone does not seem right, ask. Be there!Aug 25th, 2013Someone from Country Club Hills, IL signed.

I am a sufferer of chronic anxiety and depression from my early teens. Many people are misinformed or simply don't want to understand that we do not wish to be this way. If I could live a normal life like I see other people it would be worth more than all the riches in the world. It is a ball and chain that every sufferer must endure daily. Mental illness isn't something you go looking for.. It just happens. And if they could get more cheaper mental clinics that actually had reputable doctors, then we would all be better off. I tried to get help as a youth at a "cheap" clinic and they diagnosed me with mild depression. HA!! Now I take 300mg of zoloft, xanax, trazodone, and high BP meds because of stress. Yes, America needs to be re-informed of the current issues facing Americans and the stress that the economy has given to the American public which has led to an increase in depression, anxiety, and suicide rates because half of us are barely eating or paying bills.REPORT COMMENTS

Raising public awareness regarding the realities of mental illnesses and disorders is crucial to helping people to admit that they need help, AND to being treated fairly by others once they do decide to get help to overcome or manage their condition. Illness is Illness, whether it be physical or mental, and this one can be treated. The STIGMA of admitting to suffering from, and getting treatment (possibly including medication) for, mental illness ABSOLUTELY HAS TO BE ELIMINATED to ensure that ALL who need treatment will seek it. When people who are not suffering from a mental illness are not educated about it, they tend to be opinionated. Usually their opinions are of a negative nature or trivialize the subject. Their ignorance can have a negative impact and be very damaging to someone who is already dealing with an overwhelming mental illness. They need kindness and understanding just like anyone suffering from any other illness. Public awareness and education is desperately needed in our society.REPORT COMMENTS

Same the world over. It's great at least to have a "Mental Health Awareness Week." I'm campaigning in Australia. Let's make the most of our free voices!REPORT COMMENTS

Recently diagnosed Bipolar II. The mentally ill are just like you and me. It is whether they seek treatment that makes them different.REPORT COMMENTS

We need to be as concerned about mental illness as we are about traffic deaths.REPORT COMMENTS
