H.R.1795 - Repeal the Government Pension Offset (GPO) provision

Oct 3rd, 2018Rene W. from Poteet, TX writes:
As a retired teacher if my husband dies before I do the GPO goes into affect and I do not receive any of his Social Security. If I die first he continues to receive my benefit and his social security. I am being punished for choosing to be an educator. I worked enough quarters in other jobs to receive a small check from social security. After I pay for my medicare I receive a check for $48 a month. I am just glad I am able to receive that. -

As a hardworking teacher, I do not feel that I should be penalized social security benefits for paying into a teacher retirement. If I pay into social security I should receive what I paid in.REPORT COMMENTS

When I retired as a federal employee under the CSRS-offset retirement system, the moment I reached eligibility for SS(62) my federal pension was reduced by $500 by some top-secret formula because OPM would not provide me with the calculations for this reduction. And I had paid into social security for around 25 years. The key phrase here is “eligible.” Even if I did not draw SS my pension was automatically reduced at my first SS eligibility. I too found this absurd and just another governmental bureaucratic decision to show that hard working people get penalized when working in government service.REPORT COMMENTS

Jun 6th, 2018Eric G. from Coeur D Alene, ID writes:
The laws, Government Pension Offset and The Windfall Elimination Provision are discriminatory and absurd. No one should be penalized for working as a Federal Employee under the Civil Service System and later working for a private firm paying into Social Security. If a person has paid into Social Security, they deserve the full benefits of the amount paid in. In the private sector, it is perfectly acceptable and allowable to pay into social security, receive full benefits for the amount paid in and also collect a pension from the private employer, without reducing any social security benefits. This is discrimination and inequality for government workers who also choose to work in the private sector.REPORT COMMENTS

This is discrimination as any one paying into social security should receive the maximum the benefit allowed and it should not be reduced because some one worked for the government. In the private sector it is allowable to collect full social security benefits with out being penalized for getting a retirement or pension from a private employer.REPORT COMMENTS

Once again we who have served as Firefighters and Police Officers and others that have contributed to the safety and education of others are penalized. Not only do we pay the WEP which is in effect a tax, but whatever is left over of our social security benefits is also taxed. That by anyone's standard is a double tax.REPORT COMMENTS

I kind of understand the reasoning behind the WEP, but in no way do I see that the GPO is fair or just! Just because I am a state employee I am not entitled to my spouses social security, really!!!! If I am a federal employee this law does not apply. I see this as discrimination! The GPO law needs to be repealed. How this law ever passed, and how it has been allowed to stand for this long is beyond me! I was married for 30 years. He was an attorney. We had major debt, and I still do, and because I am a school teacher I cannot draw one dime of his social security! Not right!REPORT COMMENTS

I worked Civil Service for 10 years before retirement but worked 20 years outside government and paid into Social Security. I was penalized because I receive a government retirement check. When my husband died after working and paying into Social Security for 37 years, I received nothing from his social security payments. He died thinking he had left me part of his retirement...not true under the Pension Offset. Hence, I have been penalized twice for being a government worker.REPORT COMMENTS

I don’t know who reads these comments , but whomever please know that the WEP and specifically the GPO laws have absolutely created a hardship for me. I do receive a state teachers pension, but it’s still difficult. I do receive Medicare, but pay more. I was conned by my school system, but didn’t vote on it. Unfortunately, the majority won and we had to pull out of SS. My main concern is With high wage earners and their wives, who never earned enough SS credits or even worked, are allowed to reap the benefits of 1/2 of their spouses benefits. I worked over 10 years out of 28 under SS and receive no benefits. So, how is this fair to anyone! I know I’ll never reap any monthly benefits from SS, but hope that in near future others won’t have to go through what I have.REPORT COMMENTS

I am a retired civil service worker of 28 years of service with a pension. Also work 20 plus years in the private sector. I went to apply for my social security retirement and was very shock to find out I was only receiving half. I need some help understanding why this is happen. I work so hard all my life to enjoy my retirement and now see what the government is doing. I am not asking for other people’s money just asking for what I have worked so hard for. Every payday the government took their payment why can’t I have mind. I hope I am not asking for a handout. If I am wrong asking for this please forgive me. Thanks for letting me vent and have a nice retirement one day.REPORT COMMENTS

People are not asking for something they are not entitled to; We just want what we paid into over the years . I worked under Social Security from the age of 16 to 62. My health is failing me now, and I would like to go out on Disability, but I can't do that because all those years of working under Social Security have been cancelled out because I've worked my current job under county government for over 10 Years. Then if I were to take an earlier retirement, my benefits from Social Security would be cut. How is that fair? America is a great county, but our government needs to focus its attention on the people who helped build and sustain this country by the sweat of our brows and the burden of our backs. Its wonderful to be benevolent toward others, but Charity begins at home. Our Seniors made this county GREAT ! We just want what we worked for; Security in our later years !!!!!REPORT COMMENTS

It's time to stop steeling from the American People who worked for the Government and private sector. We didn't work multiple jobs and pay multiple pensions to get robbed. We did it to survive. Meanwhile The Government gives money to other countries. Well it's time to take care of your own people first. We are not asking for something special, we want what we paid for. When you pay into two buckets, you should receive from two buckets. The problem is, the government stole from the national bucket. Stop robbing the Americans who supported you.REPORT COMMENTS
