Teachers who have paid into Social Security deserve the same benefit as others. People who dedicate themselves to teaching (and lower income) should not be penalized with reduced Social Security benefits. The US needs to attract more people to join the teaching profession. This policy severs to detract not attract newcomers to teaching. -

It seems to me that the distinguishing between public and private pension recipients is directed primarily at one on the largest employment sectors, educators. I have worked for 20 years before becoming as a teacher. After 20 years in teaching I retired and learned that SS allotment would be approximately $150.00 of which money is withheld for Medicare. I questioned this amount at our local SSA Office and was told I should be "grateful" that I get this much. I now work in the private sector again and find that what is withheld from my check is enough to cover the amount I get for SS. Why reward those that don't work and punish those who have put forth an effort.REPORT COMMENTS

I'm the widow of a WWII veteran. Due to the fact that I received a pension from a local government my survivor benefit from SSA is $5 (five dollars) after deduction. SSA stopped payment of the $5 after I became eligible for Medicare then charged me $135 every month for my coverage. My pension was earned through service and contribution! $5 for my years of care and devotion to the man I married and the child we raised not to mention the 22 years of service my husband dedicated to his country. Repeal this law, give credit where it's due and reestablish the trust and integrity of our government.REPORT COMMENTS

Big Steal by the Government! Working people and the companies they worked for paid into the SS in good faith. The money paid in belongs to the person who earned it. A big money grab by the government. The government is supposed to be by the people, for the people and the elected officials need to do their jobs and fix this so that the American citizen who paid in gets their money back.REPORT COMMENTS

I worked in the private sector and have more than my 40 quarters that qualified me for SS when I retired. I then worked for DOD for over 25 years and retired in 2006. Because of the WEP my government takes a great deal of my EARNED SS. It pays my Medicare and i get a whopping $43. a month. YES. Forty three dollars a month. Then when my husband died, I went to SS and they said I qualified to receive his SS instead of mine, but i could not get it because of the Government pension offset. So not only did my government take my earned SS, but then denied me taking my husband's SS which every one of my friends whose husband has died, are getting. I have letters of commendation from Commander of the USN, got to go on the Saratoga and shot off the deck in a jet, first female supervisor in the Test Dept. My husband was a Vietnam Vet and was hit with agent orange. His failing health caused him to live in a VA home for the last 8 years of his life. AND THIS IS HOW OUR COUNTRY TREATS US??????REPORT COMMENTS

I have worked for the Dept. of Defense for over 30 years, followed my husband from different duty stations, married for 43 years, I am a retiree of CSRS. I cannot get any of my husband's Social Security because of the offset, 2/3 of my pension I would loose. A spouse married for 10 years, divorced or windowed can apply for X-Spouse's Social Security, how does this make any sense. This rule needs to be changed. I worked hard for my pension and I do not feel I should be penalized because I had a career with the Dept. of Defense.REPORT COMMENTS

I am within a year of retirement and have worked my whole lifetime except when I raised my two sons. My concern is when I retire I will not receive enough retirement to live on and then the small amount I could receive from SS will be cut because of this ruling. I was also informed that I would not be able to receive benefits from my husbands SS if something were to happen to him, because of this law. He has worked all his life to provide for his family and that money he has coming to him, will be obsorbed and given to others that have not done the work. Please correct this for all those that have put in their dedicated time .REPORT COMMENTS
