Congressional Reform Act of 2013

3,637 Letters Sent So Far

Article 1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.

Article 2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

Article 3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

Article 4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

Article 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

Article 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

Article 7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/31/13. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women. Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

I know this is totally useless, practically speaking, because Congress will stick their fingers in their ears going la-la-la while giving themselves more pay-raises and benefits, but it felt good to register my fury.
Liberty & Justice for All. Support the Declaration of Independence & the constitution of the United States :-)
Fair for all!
I think doing this would help keep our congress a little less arrogant and untouchable. Maybe they'll do a better job...
Modifivations would help.
cut salary 5% and add 2 bonus features --1 10% of base salary at individual congressman level, 20% of base salary at full congress level. Both added to congressional elections every year with bonus equal to fraction of yes votes voted. Note 2 questions 1 my congressman deserves the individual bonus, 2 all congressmen deserve the congressional bonus. Bonuses to be paid retroactivily at the start of the next congess. Freshmen congressmen do not get any bonus.
Public Servants should feel the pain by staying at home of the poorest in his area (just 2 days in year, till he is elected)
Americans are paying for politicians and their benefits when they can hardly survive themselves due to the bad economy, and lack of jobs available. The American people are suffering more and more due to the bad decisions, or lack of decisions politicians have made/are making. Politicians should stop being greedy and live by the principles of America. All men are created equal, meaning the politicians should participate in social security as all other Americans, must pay for their own retirement plans, participate in America’s healthcare system that they voted in, and abide by all articles noted in the congressional reform act of 2013. Politicians should not receive a pension for working for America; they should get a job afterwards like all other American citizens. If I was a politician, and was able to get the pension they have, i would feel guilty that after my couple of years of service to the american people, they would be paying my high pension every year for the rest of my life for acting as an average citizen, when I know that americans are struggling to survive in this economy. I would deny the pension, and work, like every other citizen does, to put food on my own table and pay my own bills.
