Petition to Freeze Congress Pay, Benefits and Members Representation Allowances

Hold Congress Accountable!

As a military spouse and Mom, I decided to become education on what the Fiscal Cliff means for ?Defense Cuts? I did some digging to see what the financial cliff means for my family. Here is what I found is on the chopping block for the military.

Defense cuts include funding of the war, all military family programs, training, equipment, schools, commissaries (our grocery stores) and family health care. These services are vital to keeping our military strong. I am not saying the military doesn't need to cut back, but not like this. If our military goes over the fiscal cliff will they be strong enough to protect our nation from our enemies?

I've come up with a better idea. Instead of taking cuts from the military how about we take it where it will make most good? Take it from the pockets of our elected officials who are supposed to represent us and run this nation. I petition we freeze Congress pay, Benefits and Members representation allowances until they work together and pass a budget a sustainable budget that keeps our nations and our military strong.

Congress current salary (2011-2012) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year. A cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase takes effect annually unless Congress votes to not accept it. Congress receives MRA for franked mail, personnel compensation, travel, rent, communications, utilities, printing and reproduction, other service, supplies, and materials equipment. Each congressman spends an average MRA of $1,446,009 a year on top of their salary. Each member receives about $1.6 million a year from tax payers to do their job. That?s $2,381,057.20 a day we spend for 535 people that can?t do their job. I think we?d get much more done in Congress and I bet it wouldn't wait until the last minute.
