1. Lives would significantly change for those with ADHD if the school system acknowledged it's seriousness, focused on teaching and learning rather than process and production, encouraged strengths without downplaying weaknesses, ensured consistent implementation of IEPs/504s, provided ongoing training for teachers, and actively worked with parents.

2. Adults have ADHD and most are undiagnosed and untreated with some going through life feeling inadequate, unappreciated, out of sync and unable to accomplish the goals that a tenacious little inner voice tells them they can.

3. ADHD affects the entire family emotionally, financially, and socially. The impact is compounded when multiple family members have ADHD, especially when it is one or both parents.
I am almost 29yrs old and have been living with adhd my whole life. I am a mother of 2. My 7yr old son has ADHD as well as other behavioral issues going with him.. no meds have helped yet but we are still hopeful. he is amazing n i love him dearly.
I have a 6 year old daughter with adhd.
I have ADHD. I was diagnosed with it when I was in Kindergarden. I've been living with it for 30 years now.
I'm a mother of 4 with ADHD! 1 child with ADHD!

My son and I both have ADHD! It is 24/7 at our home.
My son suffered with this till he turned 27. Thankfully after all this time and medicine he's doing great in college and life! Thank God he's on his way to becoming an RN.

Both my kids have ADHD and we need all the help we can get to help them and understand thier minds!
I have an AWESOME dr. She is very easy to work with. She knows me and listens to me!!! I am blessed!
I think Dr.s should quit making you feel bad if you have to take adderal to feel normal ,some make you feel like you have a drug problem& they never change the dosage
We NEED more support. I'm 73 years young and have fought this battle all my life, blindly. I NEVER KNEW what was 'wrong" with me until, by chance, I found information on ADHD. I spun my wheels for 60 years just to be 'normal'. No ONE should have to live their life like that!
Proud mother of 3 ADHD children, wouldnt trade them for the world I accept there ADHD as what gives them such great loving outgoing personalities why cant the rest if the world accept acknowledge and enjoy our children as much as we and the ones closest to them do also?!
Greater awareness and education is needed within our schools to identify and address the needs of students with ADHD. It is often ignored in our schools because administrators don't want to address the needs of the students. Not addressing the needs of these students can lead to more serious issues. Schools need to be held more accountable.
My son and little sister in the Big Brother Big Sister Program both have ADHD/ADD. As a child my son had many difficulties in school and this has evolved through his adult life. I am supporting this cause full fledged. As long as the correct dosage of medication is administered along with the necessary counseling and resources are available, these young children and adults can acheive their dreams and become successful in life.
Untreated ADHD is the danger. Untreated, the individual is at danger for depression and other psychological disorders. This misunderstood disorder does not mean that someone can not concentrate. With help, they can become anything. I was helped, and I achieved. I want to spread the message that it can be done. Success can be achieved.
My child is personable, smart and handsome. My child is not a problem child, my child is not a behavioural issue, my child is not a result of bad parenting, my child disorder is not a joke/figment of one's imagination, my child is in a regular class and getting hight grades; not in "special" or remedial classes because they HAVE adhd ADHD is real and not only is the child affected but the whole family as well. It's a struggle, it's a fight its a constant bid to advocate because people minimilize the disorder.....Join the cause.....ADHD does not define us; it's what we struggle with.
As an adult with ADHD and the mother of four children with ADHD, it is important to me that you know that ADHD is a serious neurobiological disorder. It is not caused by computers or bad parenting. I am very proud of my children and the great efforts they make every day to overcome the challenges of ADHD. I worry, however, for them and our entire community about the effect of living in a society that jokes about and belittles ADHD regularly. Please help us during National ADHD Awareness Week to recognize the courage and the competence of children, adults and families affected by ADHD. Your truly, Natalie Knochenhauer
