Action alert: Help block the Dirty Water Act of 2011 (HR 2018)
Published on June 28, 2011
A new bill called the Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act would gut the Clean Water Act by giving the states, rather than the EPA, the ultimate decision-making authority over our nationís water quality standards.
The Clean Water Act (CWA) was created because States were not doing their job to protect our water resources. Thanks to the CWA 30+ years later water quality in the US has improved (we do not have rivers catching on fire) and this is something to celebrate.
Spokane River west of SpokaneNow Washington wants to remove power by the EPA to enforce the CWA. This is a terrible plan and moves us in the absolute wrong direction. Waterkeepers across the United States are mobilizing to protect the Clean Water Act and our birth right to swimmable, fishable, drinkable water.
This bill just passed committee (6/22) and we have to act fast. Notice of this markup was only posted the day of the vote, giving little chance for citizen input. Passage of this bill on the floor will have deleterious impacts on the Spokane River and on our nationís clean water; and would create regulatory uncertainty that polluters are seeking.
Please ACT NOW and call your Congressperson and urge them to oppose on HR 2018, The Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act of 2011.
