Elected officials who resign to run for another, often higher, position in government service should finish their term in office. That's why they were elected. Special elections should only be held for an official who has died during his/her term.
Special elections are costly - not only for the candidate, but for the state(s) that must bear the cost in terms of time and money.
Oftentimes, the winner will serve for only a few months and must again solicit donations to run again but also has the advantage of having "served", if only for a brief time.
Let's level the playing field and require all elected officials to complete their full term in the office to which they were elected to serve.
