I am a former active duty Marine and am currently serving as a police officer in one of the largest cities in the state of Texas. I am very interested in re-enlisting in the Marine Corps, but, due to my tattoos, I have been told that I do not qualify. I joined the Corps in Oct 2003 and was tattooed by Oct 2004. When I was released (EAS, honorably discharged) in 2007, I was told that I could re-enlist whenever I wanted to. These new rules have now disqualified an honorably discharged Marine Corps Sgt who wishes to continue his service to God, Country, and Corps. I am 26 years old and in great fighting shape. Please give me direction in getting back into the fight.

Semper Fi,

William Jackman
Sgt, USMC
I served four years in the Corps including a combat tour in Iraq but was not allowed to stay in due to my tattoos, all of which I got while i the Corps. I planned on amking a career of it.
isn't this discrimination? im going into the marines, i've only got one tattoo on my chest from below my collar bone to from one side to another "gone but not forgotten" i don't see how tattoos affect your ability to work and serve, quit being so picky if somebody wants to SERVE this country they should be able to, if somebody wants to lay down their LIFE for YOURS why would you say no? get with it America, you all are picky now until another world war starts and you start MAKING people go into the military. called the draft im sure you have heard of it. it's ironic how im going to be fighting for "freedom" yet people with body modifications don't have that freedom to do what they have always dreamed about . who cares about how it looks in a uniform! this is America! we all have the right to do what we want to do, be who we want to be, do what we want to do with OUR bodies, and if we want to go and risk our lives for you we should be able to! we got a whole new generation, and you better get use to it, this isnt 1960 or whatever anymore. we dont care what is socially acceptable. its called freedom. get with it or get out of this country.
i want to join the marine corps but dew to my sleeves i cant join so im going threw laze treatment just to get in the marines.but this not fair for an American cant serve his country because tattoos.
I have two tattoos one of my sons name on my back and one on my forarm which is half an inch out of regulation and i am proud to be an american now that i am in this country and i want my dream is to be a mArine!
My husband wants to join the military but the marines he has a two tats one on his back which is my sons name and one on his for arm which is our last name and becuz of half an inche he is unable to join the marines which to me is unfair he isnt from this country but he is so proud and wants to be a marine

There is alot of talk with the same thing happening in the Army sometime soon. I really hope that they realize that these changes will not only hurt Marines and Soldiers but their families as well. Alot of these Marines and Soldiers, are Combat Veterans, all their sweat, blood, and wounds endured from fighting for this great Country- and now some will be denied all the things that they are deserved. I hope that these post spread, so that our Soldiers and Marines get the support that they deserve. If tattoos do not exceed the normal duty uniform, with exception to the PT uniform, then it shouldn't matter-plan and simple. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS....THEY"VE SUPPORTED US!!!
I feel that just because someone has a tattoo doesn't mean they aren't capable of fighting for my freedom, and yours. It's unfair how marines and want to be marines are being treated just because they've got a full sleeve tat.
After scoring high on ASVAB tests and meeting all physical requirements expected of me I was told despite my qualifications I could never be a marine and was thus referred to a different branches of the military all which were willing to waver my tattoo's and expect me into their divisions. Why should the branch I know is the best chance to serve my country deny me when all others will take me? Ultimately it is the loss of US Marine corp as well as an injustice to me to disqualify me based on these premises. It is a tragedy to know that such a respected branch of military service has limited itself because of an outdated perception of professionalism.
If your tattoo is not offensive, vulgar or un-American, I don't understand how this could disqualify you. How can you deny a citizen his right to fight for his country if he is in all appearance a loyal, dedicated individual. New laws that disqualify wannabe soldiers need to be amended, as this seems entirely unconstitutional.
This is absolutely stupid. Just because someone has a tattoo in an "aesthetically undesirable" place doesn't mean they can't do their job.
What is the greatest lie every created? What is the most vicious obscenity ever perpetrated on mankind? Slavery? The Holocaust? Dictatorship? No. It's the tool with which all that wickedness is built: altruism. Whenever anyone wants others to do their work, they call upon their altruism. Never mind your own needs, they say, think of the needs of... of whoever. The state. The poor. Of the army, of the king, of God! The list goes on and on. How many catastrophes were launched with the words "think of yourself"? It's the "king and country" crowd who light the torch of destruction. It is this great inversion, this ancient lie, which has chained humanity to an endless cycle of guilt and failure. My journey to Rapture was my second exodus. In 1919, I fled a country that had traded in despotism for insanity. The Marxist revolution simply traded one lie for another. Instead of one man, the tsar, owning the work of all the people, *all* the people owned the work of all of the people. So, I came to America: where a man could own his own work, where a man could benefit from the brilliance of his own mind, the strength of his own muscles, the *might* of his own will. I had thought I had left the parasites of Moscow behind me. I had thought I had left the Marxist altruists to their collective farms and their five-year plans. But as the German fools threw themselves on Hitler's sword "for the good of the Reich", the Americans drank deeper and deeper of the Bolshevik poison, spoon-fed to them by Roosevelt and his New Dealists. And so, I asked myself: in what country was there a place for men like me - men who refused to say "yes" to the parasites and the doubters, men who believed that work was sacred and property rights inviolate. And then one day, the happy answer came to me, my friends: there was *no* country for people like me! And *that* was the moment I decided... to sign this petition
What this policy tells me is they don't care about how well somebody can do a job, they only care about how they look while doing it. Think of all the recruits they turned away willing to serve their country and all of the veterans they labeled as "unprofessional". Veterans who served in numerous wars and some who gave the ultimate sacrifice labeled because somebody behind a desk said so.
Corporal Foreman 0311/USMC
Agreed. Corporal Foreman 0311/USMC
I also am being denied entry because of my tattoo on my wrist, which can easily be covered and won't show unless in PTUs.
It has been my son's life long dream to become a marine. He was a young marine ever since he was 10yrs old. He recently got a tattoo on his leg, in which he was notified by his recruiter that his tattoo has just disqualified him from following his dreams in becoming a marine. He wasn't aware of the marine tattoo policy and now he regrets getting it so very much. I am so very sad for him.
Tattoo's for me is a form of art. I've tried applying for the Marine Corps in hopes for earning the title. I passed the Physical and Strength tests as well as score a 95 on my ASVAB. Only reason why I got denied was because of a small "Tribal" Designed tattoo on my wrist.
I just got a no because of my tattoo ., which is so unfair feels like i been spit out of this country . Now my dream to be a marine will just be a dream forever.
I dont feel the order should stand at all. I have been trying to reenlist for 5 yrs and denied due to just tattoos.
I have a long family history of proud Marines and every other branch of service, and i have yet to serve. my tattoo shows below the PT gear by a little over an inch, and is considered a half sleeve. The tattoo is of New York City, and my Grandpa who served.. i do not believe that the policy is a good one, and I do not want to settle for the Army, because it is my time to serve, and i would love to carry along the tradition in my family.
i looked this up with concerns of what tattoo i should get but fear not being able to reenlist because of it... just listening to that argument sounds ridiculous! i am giving my mind and physical body to the Corps and allow it to go through aches normally i would have never gone gone through.its true we did sign the contract so there is no surprises i guess on this policy but as a Marine this is me trying to make a difference and stand up for what i believe in and for the right reasons.its true what many say. many great leaders will be lost because of this, we need them.im talking about the ones before the new policy.
I am being denied re entry into the Corps because of tattoos that i got while i was in. i got out the policy got more stringent and thus me not being able to serve my country in the proudest damn uniform in the world. give us our tattoos back marines deserve that to say the least.

If killing the enemy is our mission, what difference will it make if I have a tattoo or not? The enemy doesn't care. It doesn't deter my fighting ability. When people see a Marine, they think about fighting and winning wars, not whether or not he/she has a tattoo.
For one to be judged on the color (ink) of their skin is no different that any other form of discrimination. This policy needs to be revised in such a way that it doesn't hinder good Marines in any opportunity that would be otherwise be disqualified because of tattoos. Now more than any previous time are tattoos accepted within society, there no longer looked at in the stereotypical ways they once were. Revise this policy! I agree with zero visible tattoos while in dress uniform; none on hands, face, neck. Nothing defacing the United States; nothing pornographic. Tattoos shouldn't be a variable in retention, performance/leadership should.
Another example of the politically correct pouges running amuck. Want professional killers to look nice. WAFWAT
To whom it may concern,

This policy is a mock of what Marines stand for. I just turned 18 and I have wanted to serve in the core since I was in middle school. Our nation's best defense doesn't discriminate on who dies on the battlefield or who sacrifices themselves for our great country. The soldier, or better yet, the man, is not determined by the color of his skin or what is on it. If someone is willing to fight for our great country of America, I say liberty and justice for ALL. Please repeal this policy and let me and many more fine men and women uphold the traditions and values of the United States Marine Core.
Why should tattoos make you any less of a dedicated soldiers.
I've been in for almost 4 years now. We hold everything to the highest standards w/ or w/ out tattoos.
I was denied because i have a quarter sleeve tattoo on my right forarm of the statue of liberty, Staten Island ferry, and New York Yankee symbol. It just makes no sense to me im in the best shape of my life at the age of 23 and have everything I need to become A marine. Why am I being discriminated?
I also was denied the right to fight for my country in perfect physical condition because of my tattoos none are vulgar gang related or discriminatory in any way. I believe it's wrong to deny someone a better future because of past decisions if they are truly willing to better themselves and serve others. Especially since a lot of the images of marines in the media are of the tough Marines with a cigar and tattoos, how do you expect dedicated young men and women who have always wanted to be Marines to look when that's the Marine we saw growing up? I don't think the tattoo policy should be revised, just relaxed, you know give us a chance to at least make it to the MEPS station.
Im not able to join the marines because of a tattoo on my wrist. I'ts a name and can be covered with my hand. I could understand if people with sleeves and larger gets disqualified, but my tattoo? I'm not joining the marines in hopes of people seeing my tattoo, I want to join in hopes of becoming a leader and serving my country! So hopefully this petition does something. I'ts in the hearts of americans to do what's right for this country, not a tattoo.
im not able to join the marines because of a tattoo on my wrist!!! its a nanme and can be covered with my hand. i could understand if people with sleeves and larger gets disqualified, but my tattoo?? im not joining the marines in hopes of people seeing my tat, i wanna join in hopes of becoming a leader and serving my country!!! so hopefully this petition does something?!
I can't join the corps because of my ink. My tatoos have no effect on me going infantry for the corps. Im going to have to go army now. Not only is it unfair for marines that are always in but im not even interested in higher jobs. I just want infantry, and i want the corps.
My brother in law is "grandfathered" For his sleeves and my fiance is getting tattoos and are Marines. I feel the more and more strict they are getting on the tattoo policy is getting ridiculous. Yeah I understand the lip I do but places that are not visible in uniform or in PT cloths shouldn't matter! You don't want them visible there you go they aren't visible,
I know a young man that was just DQ'd because of a tatoo that barely touches his collar bone and does not show in dress uniforms. He is very unhappy with this. He is a good man being turned away because of this tatoo issue and it is a shame. His friend with high blood pressure was able to get in and that should have been an issue before a tatoo that cannot be seen. He would have been honored to be a Marine. This rule needs to be revoked.
we should be proud our young men and women are willing to serve...especially in time of confict.
I tried to join the marines but was turned down because my tattoo, which is not visible in any type of uniform including pt, touched my collar bone near my shoulder. I think this policy needs to be changed.
Sleeve tatoos should be considered a tradition, its like carying a K-bar every Marine should do it .
My brother (the Marine) and I were going to get matching Soldier;s Memorial tattoos, now because of this policy we can't because it doesn't meet the size requirement. It's a memorial tattoo for Christ's sake! Let it go. I have mine and now we have to wait till he gets out for him to get his. I don't see why if it's not offensive why it wouldn't be allowed! Dumb dumb dumb! I see so many Veterans with a crap load of tattoos, and back in the older days tattoos were a lot more taboo. Makes no sense.
i approve that.. peace out John Bias
As long as the tattoos are covered with the uniform, who cares. These brave men & women are serving our country, let them have their tattoos.
Do we, or do we not, live in a free country? Why would/should government care what is inked on a person's skin when they are fighting to give the freedoms/rights that we all have....I would hope that a person's skin color, whatever they choose would not be discriminated against.
As a tax payer, voter, and one who is greatful to these men and women who serve all of us and protect our freedoms, I am appalled that these good people are being treated this way. What do tatoos have to do with the quality of one's service?
