Studies have shown that genetically modified soybeans fed to rats causes infertility by the 3rd generation. Also proven is that anything genetically modified is dominating and spreading as far as Mexico and Canada. Please wake up and understand that GMO alfalfa will lead to it spread and dominating our grass which will be eaten by all animals which will end up in us and could lead to infertility. Infertility is already rising! Thanks to Soy Milk and Soy believed to be a safe product in anything.
GMOs are neither safe, sustainable or required. Anyone who foolishly believes otherwise is either extremely ill informed, naive, ignorant or corrupt – take your pick. GMOs are wrongly promoted as the saviour of the world, instead GMOs place all inhabitants at serious risk of a catastrophic famine. To base any crop system on such a narrow varietal base is an invitation to disaster on many levels. Diversity and freedom to save seeds without the threat of persecution is paramount for everyone regardless where they live. Producing food without any contamination from GMOs and toxic chemicals must be vigorously encouraged and rewarded.
Please, if you haven't signed this petition yet, please do so now! The planting of open-pollinated GMO alfalfa should never have been approved, and we need to get this decision reversed before spring planting season! If you have any questions about why this is important, please post them!
The impact of gentically engineered food is not understood and approving this is reckelss. Don't make a decision that will irreversably alter our food supply without the proper scientific understanding of what it really means. Keep organic organic.

The USDA's approval of GMO alfalfa and other crops (sugar beets) reveals a fundamental lack of understanding for the need to protect biodiversity, and an apparent ignorance of the growing demand for organic and traditionally farmed (but non-gmo) grains, produce, dairy and livestock. The motives of the likes of Monsanto are very clear in promoting Roundup-ready alfalfa -- a crop that is apparently not susceptible to weeds -- to further it's monopolization of the farming industry... at the expense of people and the planet.
Alfalfa will be the first GM perennial that is released on a wide scale. Alfalfa is involved with honey production among the other thousands of uses. Bees will spread this new fangled plant on a larger scale then ever before scene, contaminating natural alfalfa. Also, there is no telling how this will effect the bees, wich are key to our own survival. Monsanto is just concerned with the money it will make destroying local farmers and increasing its own monopoly.
There are so many reasons to take a stance against GMO crops. There has not been any in depth studies on the long term effects of the consumption of GM crops. We need to know what will happen generations from now, not just the short term. Many of the studies that have been done were not done independently of Monsanto either. There has been numerous studies showing how Roundup strips the soil of its greatly needed organisms, how there are now a new strain of super weeds that have grown in response to the Roundup, and that there are signs of GM crops contributing to disease (example: International Journal of Biological Sciences study).
The sad fact is is that what the USDA decides will not necessarily be what is best for the citizens of this country. Companies like Monsanto use their money and lobbying power to sway legislation which is really un-democratic because what Monsanto wants is not representative of what the vast majority of citizens want. It is very curious that in Europe, where big businesses do not have nearly as much power as here in the U.S., GMO crops are largely regulated or even banned. We need to take a lesson from these countries and choose cautiousness over profits. Smaller scale farmers who farm in a sustainable and organic way is what is best for our economy, health, and the enviornment (just one example: Fruit and Soil Quality of Organic and Conventional Strawberry Agroecosystems by Washington State University)
Last but not least, you have the aspect of inevitable contamination of organic and conventional crops with GMOs. This is undeniable and unacceptable. There is no monetary value you can give to organic farmers that will make this okay. People buy organic because they do not want GMOs in their system and do not want to support that kind of system. This is a very dangerous precipice we are on right now - we are at risk to lose crop varieties that have been around for as long as we have or longer. You can’t make that kind of biodiversity in a lab like you can the GMO crops. Once they are gone, they are gone.
I implore you to listen to the voice of the people and not the demands of Monsanto.

The number of people with allergies to soy, wheat, dairy/caesin, & peanuts (just to name a few)is growing everyday. People - children are dying as a result of these allergies. Our bodies were not met to consume these "products" and they are acting accordingly. PLEASE - Stop GM Alfalfa!!!
