Abolish The Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act

We believe that the Satellite Home Viewer Act (recently the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004 aka SHVERA) is unfair. Do you have family members living in different states or children going to college in other states? Wouldn't it be nice if you get the local channels from other cities (for example, New York City locals in Los Angeles)? Unforunately, it's against federal law to provide out-of-market local channels to "served" households who subscribed to satellite (DirecTV or Dish Network). We think that the law is unfair and violates free flow of information. We want changes in the law. But lobbyists like the National Assoiciation of Broadcasters don't want changes in this law because they said it would hurt "localism". The Satellite Home Viewer Act (SHVA) must be repealed or declared unconstitional. Also the distant network restrictions must be lifted and the waiver system be abolished.

Every single American deserved to watch out-of-market locals on satellite (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, CW, MyNetworkTV, PBS), even "Time-Shifting" (for example a person living on the west coast wanted to watch "The Today Show" live at 4:00am Pacific/7:00am Eastern from an east coast station rather than waiting three hours later to watch the taped-delayed version at 7:00am Pacific from a west coast station). The law saids if you have local-into-local stations on satellite, you will be unable to get the distant network feeds (from New York/Los Angeles) of the four networks. We have no choice but to get them. But how would you feel if your favorite television show is pre-empted (or not carried at all) by the local affiliates? (for example, NBC affiliate KPRC-TV in Houston, Texas does not show the NBC series "Poker After Dark") We need alternatives. That's why we urged the House of Representives, the Senate, and the President of the United States to make some changes that every American (including Boat Owners) should watch distant network feeds of CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox from other cities in your area.

What a racket. This whole idea of preventing satellite customers form accessing other local markets in spirit to evenly distribute viewership is a sham. Cable companies get away with it, why not satellite. Special lobbying interest have got to be attached tho this one. I live on the WI/IL border and can't get Chicago local, what do I care about Milwaukee, nice town, but really not anything interesting to me. Meanwhile my faithful overpaying Time Warner customer friends get parallel networks, WTF is wrong with this picture, literally?
get rid of this stupid law we deserve the right to the distant network feeds
The government needs to keep their nose out of everyone's business.
I think it is wrong what this does. I am getting more tired of the gov. sticking there nose into every little thing we do. If I want my local channels (which I will have to pay for) and spend my own hard earned money on other distant channels I should be able to. This is not about giving the people what we want, this is about making more money for big business, thats who wins, oh and by the way, thanks to my LOCAL Senators and Reps for taking money from them to make sure that I, an unintelligent, not sure what I want or need person is well taken care of! (RANT OVER)
I agree with this and I am also hearing that they are trying to abolish free local broadcasting - that would be a terrible thing to let happen in our country. There are many people that do not have cable television and I do not want to be FORCED to have to pay for cable.
I can get a newspaper sent to my current home from my home town 2300 miles away, Why shouldn't I be able to see a local channel from another area if I choose?
I'm in the military and currently live in an area that doesn't get local channels on satellite. I'll gladly pay to have the locals for whatever region I choose.
I'm in the military and live in a distant state. I get my local sports teams.
