What?! The descriptions they give for other dog types they don't want would include ALL dogs, including yappy fluffy squeak toys. This is just absurd! Dobies have a loooooong military history. Some of the 1st heroic dog stories were with dobies. They're bred for their intelligence, loyal and gentle nature. The only aggressive thing they were bred for was their looks and that was originally for a tax payer to walk through town unharassed.ANY dog can and will be protective of its family and property. People need to quite with breed segregation!!
I remember as a child in the 80's when my dad was relocated to Connecticut and we had to move into navy housing...we had to get rid of our Shelties whom we had for 9 years! It still breaks my heart to this day and I am almost 40!
I am an Army Captain and loving Doberman owner. No study or group has ever declared this a dangerous breed. They are a German Protection Breed just like the non-banned German Shepard. The Doberman was once a loyal and brave service dog in the US Millitary. This ban was instituted by someone who did not do the proper research.
I have a 3 year old male Doberman who is the sweetest lovable and mushiest dog. Due to their intelligence they can be trained to be aggressive if that's what you need them to do. However, that is not in their nature. They are portrayed that way in the movie industry but think about it. These are working dogs and look how well they do as actors ... that's why they are chosen for so many jobs because they are so astute. People need to do research on this breed. I hope this helps
Dobermans are a very sweet breed of dogs...they are very loyal and very good family dogs.I would trust a doberman with anyone...they have a very bad reputation but if people only knew what great dogs they are they would change their opinion...I hope that people change their mind and not ban this breed from their families!
It's crazy that they would just decide to ban a dog because of the reputation it's gotten in the past and from the Media. Doberman's are one of the friendliest breeds of dogs I've ever met. I would never live somewhere or work for a place that tried to ban me from keeping a specific type of pet if I already owned one. It would be like asking me to get rid of a child.
I have a doberman, and I too was told I would have to move off post. My dog is like my child, he is very loving, has a mild temperment and wouldn't hurt anything or anyone. I find this totally rediculous to punish an entire breed. Infact, it's like racism...what would happen if someone told you that you couldn't move on post because you were black, white, hispanic, etc..because studies show that for such and such reason you have the propensity to become violent...seriously?? this is stupid! My husband has served in the army for 19 years !
Isn't the facts based on how a dog is trained to react in any given situation? Dobermans have been a valuable asset to our servicemen and women. Don't these people deserve the best! Dobermans are extremely loyal to there master.
only bred for protrection by louis doberman. Is our military so uniformed? oh yes, forgot our boys shoot anyone not confirmed as an enemy? About the shout itself? Unnecessary classification for a dog that served in two wars admirably and distinctionl. Sorry Just more stupidity.
I owned a Doberman and loved it! She was very gentle and sweet. You should like at your history, Dobermans has served next to our men during the wars, protocting our troops while they slept, watched over the troops as they marched. To ban part of your history is like banning all the past men and women who served. Small dogs are the biggest problem when it comes to biting. A Doberman will not bite unless you hurt their masters.
My Min Pin is more dangerous than my Doberman! My Doberman protects my 3-year-old nephew as if he was her puppy. She didn't even move when he was a year old and was sticking his fingers in her ears and up her nose. Had he tried that with the other dog, the Min Pin would've bit him.
To whom this may concern;
Why would the army, ban the dog that stood beside our soldiers in a time of war. A dog who protected our freedom just as much as a soldier has, we don't abandon our human veteran so why abandon our canine veterans and their children. So to me it's like they are saying hey you did a great job protecting us, but we don't care for you anymore. What ever happen to never leave a fallen comrade! I am currently in the military, and have a doberman. They should test every single pet they allow on on-base housing to see how the pet does in a behavior test and then agree or disagree to allow a pet to live on base or give the dog a chance by referring a dog training class. My name is Tyrell and I am speaking out for our fellow comrades the dobermans and all other misunderstood dogs.
Why would the army ban the dog that saved our military lives in a time at war. So to me it's like they are saying hey you did a great job protecting us, but we don't care for you no more because we have moved to the more modern side of the war where we shoot from more then a couple miles away. That is so disrespectful and just darn right turning your back on your fellow comrades. What ever happen to never leave a fallen comrade! I am currently in the military, and have a Doberman. They should test every single pet they allow on on-base housing to see how the pet does in a behavior test and then agree or disagree to allow to pet to live on base. My adopted Dobies had been through who knows what~ and they are the SWEETEST couch snugglers EVER! No dominant issues or aggression! Banning a particular breed is like banning a particular race!
I currently own a pitbull and dobermann and a siamese cat. the cat is more vicious that both the dogs. So its not the dog but how the dog is brought up by the owner. Same applies to humans
My family has had dobies, & my daughter & sisters kids (as babies & toddlers) could crawl over and on him, curl up and nap with him & the cats would join in too! They are really super sweet and active- they really just need to run around or go on walks to burn some energy.. But that's no biggie!
Dobermans are not a threat to anyone. The people who mis-handle a Dog, are the biggest threats to any breed. I have owned and trained Dobies for 20 years and see no reason why the Army should ban Military families from having his wonderful breed on base!
I grew up with a Doberman that had previously been abused. I still have pictures of me at 4 years old curled up with him in his crate. He NEVER tried to hurt me!
My doberman, now passed on at age 12, was the most gentle and loving pet I have ever known. So gentle with my grandchildren and all my rescue cats. She even mothered the homeless kittens in my care. Smart, loving and always willing to please she is deeply missed.
I have had three Dobes and would get another in a heartbeat! They are wonderful animals and in no way inherently vicious. I'd trust my Dobes with my life.
Doberman Pinscher Dogs are a VERY loving, loyal breed. I have three and they are so good and not aggresive. all the dogs are aggresive but you need to train them. My father told me not to touch dog while she is eating but I train her while she is baby. I did all I want while she eating and she wont get angry at all. I love doberman and they are best.
Dobermans are wonderful, intelligent animals and make great family pets. The only problem with Dobermans is that they can't be smarter than their owners. There are a lot of
intelligent active military and their intelligent family members who deserve a great Doberman. Not sure the same can be said of the policy makers who have decided Dobermans are not allowed to live with their owners on a military installation. Maybe the policy should be that only families who have Dobermans are allowed to live on a military installation as it demonstrates the intelligence of the servicemen/women.
My work with dogs has yet to show me a true vicious dog. Only cruel humans. Dobermans have served in the Military's time of need. Yet in their time of need you abandon them. Does that memorial in Guam mean nothing? It's a shame that this country has more compassion for a woman that murder's her children than a breed that has served it's country.
My doberman is the least agreesive dog I have ever owned. I trust it more with my godson than I trust my black lab. They are sweet, people loving animals!
Dobermans SHOULD NOT be on this list. While Dobermans can be protective, they are not aggressive. Breed specific legislation is prejudice. The worst dog bites that have occurred in my neighborhood are from GOLDEN RETRIEVERS. ANY dog can be aggressive. Dobermans are service dogs - the pride of the U.S. Marines. Is THIS really what is intimidating the Army???
The Doberman is a loyal loving and easy to train breed. They have a natural instinct To detect friend form foe you would think an army base would be proud to have this breed there. These dogs are gentle and used as therapy dogs for the frail . Dobermans were used by the army how can they ban them ?
I spent a good portion of my life discriminating against the doberman breed. Until my husband talked me into adopting a dobbie mix from the pound. She is the most loyal, caring, and smart dog i have ever owned. She is good around children, the elderly, horses, and cats. She might look and sound scary when you knock on the door, but she doesnt have a single aggressive bone in her body. I would give up the army before I would give up my dobbie. The army obviously has no loyalty to a breed that served this country.
This is ridiculous...I have owned 6 dobermans in my lifetime and every one a calm, loving, and sweet family member, Not one ugly bone in their bodies, brought up with and around my kids as well as 18 cousins, nothing but a trusted and valued and loving companion..I would give up my right arm before I EVER give up my Dobermans..
