Support HR 958

Currently, there are 1.2 million employees covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). When retiring, these employees receive no compensation for their unused sick leave.
Unlike their Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) counterparts, FERS employees must “use it or lose it”.

As a result, many believe that FERS employees will use more of their sick leave as they approach retirement (resulting in productivity losses) than their CSRS counterparts. This costs the government about $68 million a year. FERS employees comprise an increasing percentage of the federal workforce, and by 2014 virtually all federal employees are expected to be in FERS.

Rep. Jim Moran has introduced H.R. 958 during the 111th Congress. The bill would "make unused sick leave creditable, for purposes of the Federal Employees' Retirement System, in the same manner as provided for under the Civil Service Retirement System". H.R. 958 would allow FERS employees, at retirement, to use their unused sick leave credit to add to their annuities, much like CSRS. The bill is intended to cut down on sick leave abuse by retiring FERS employees and
provide incentive for accruing sick hours for use during unexpected illness. The program encourages postal employees to save their hours for credit at the time of retirement.

I urge members of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 958, which would allow FERS Employees to add any unused sick leave to years they have worked to determine their retirement annuity.

For those that are diligent enough to be able to bank their sick leave losing it at the very end of a industrious career is a travesty.

As a 37-year veteran of the Postal Service, I've been very sparing in my use of sick leave. As a result, I have a sizable amount of leave banked up. I believe it is the right thing to do to allow us to be credited for that time. It make a lot more sense than "use it or lose it".

I'm retiring December 31 of this year. I haven't misused my sick leave and it would be fair and just if I could get the same credit that CRSR retiring folks get.

I hope that the addition of unused sick leave applies to those FERS amployees that are already retired especially now that SS
is not giving COLA increases this year.

Please do all you can to pass this bill. I have about 2100 hours of sick leave and really do not want to take it for something other than sick due to the fact if not taken will lose it.

I'm a Federal Employee under this retirement system and think should be the same as CSRS. Hear that some people are using this up in lieu of annual leave. You know as I do that this is not right if you're not sick and would appreciate all you can do to get this passage.I'm due to retire in December 2010 and the sooner the better.

The government is losing money on this...it would be cheaper for them to either convert unused leave into retirement or towards retirement otherwise continue to have people LIE about being sick. Another solution would be to just give the number of days as Any Purpose Leave so that people could take them for any purpose, sick or otherwise. The latter would be the CHEAPEST option for the government...Stop WASTING the people's money!!
