  5. We fully support:
    1) the banning of wild-caught animal importation. Wild-caught animals are captured and transported under the most appalling conditions, and warehoused in huge clearing centers that are poorly maintained, with little or no regard for sanitation or proper animal care.
    2) captive breeding, as captive-bred animals are healthier and less prone to temperamental/behavior issues. Captive-bred animals are more expensive than wild-caught, but this will encourage only responsible pet owners to spend money for their purchase and care.
    3) licensing and tagging of large reptiles, snakes, and other "non-native" species which could pose a hazard to our environment or populace.

We do NOT support, in any way, any law that will:
    1) ban already-existing animals in this country, regardless of their origins many decades ago.
    2) limit or deny American citizens the right to privately breed animals already in their care.
    3) enable any governmental agency to prohibit the sale or exchange of any animal to any other American citizen.
    4) enable any governmental or law enforcement agency to either remove existing animals from American citizens, or force them to surrender said animals against their will.

  7. Save my Pet!!!

I do not support the banning of importing wild caught reptiles, address those practices that have negative impact to the environment and to the reptiles health, but I do not support a "blanket ban" just because it sounds good!

  9. If this were sound, science-based proposed law, which in fact it is not, wildlife enforcement could not enforce it. Federal and state wildlife enforcement can't or won't enforce present laws, which bottom line is a primary cause for consideration of this original legislation, which purpose has been usurped by special interests' involvement. While the herpetological community has given untold hours, prepared uncounted studies, and donated much money to preserving and protecting many native and foreign species, the proponents of this legislation have yet to protect a single species or one acre of land from man. Thus, their testimony lacks substance, their sermons are hollow. Passing legislation into unenforceable law to satisfy the "feel-good" philosophy -- the religious views of one group -- while simultaneously stomping flat individual rights of another group was labeled "hate crimes" by Congress earlier this year. In an election year(2010), when it appears every vote will count to save elected seats in the most unpopular Congress on record, one would think elected representatives would ponder hard before supporting liturgical legislation such as this that contains no "pork" or "percs" for the home folks at the real risk of thousands of votes.

  15. On a side note, I do NOT support banning the importation of wild-caught stock as point 1 asserts. Although commercial collection is not without negative consequences, the ability to import new species and "fresh blood" for our (particularly smaller) captive gene pools will be important to maintaining healthy captive populations in the future. PLEASE OPPOSE HR 669 and SR 373!

  19. I have enjoyed keeping reptiles for as long as I can remember. I have volunteered my time doing snake presentations & educations to schools as well as the general public. Having served in the active duty military and reserves, I know Many military members throughout the country, as well as citizens from all walks of life, share in this great hobby. I oppose HR669 and S373. These Bills are so broad in nature, that it does not differentiate if someone owns a two foot Sand Boa, or a twenty foot reticulated python. Most species of boa and python (and there are many) are absolutly harmless. Most species would perish is escaped or let loose in the US. Thank you for your time & consideration.

  21. Two wars, a recession, health care debate double digit unemployment, eleven trillion in debt. And congress has the time to waste on fast tracking large constrictors into the Lacey Act. Simply amazing.
It would be great if congress would address the REAL issues in this country instead of appealing to the Humane Society of the United States whos real agenda is ending all pet ownership.

  23. I hope really much that intelligence and common sense will preveal on some politichian's mind. This bill is absolutly neglecting the reality under all it's aspects! That's why:
-banning big boids nationwide becsuse they're ivasive in the everglades it's really stupid, they can be invasive ONLY there due to weather so put STRICT restrictions there and remove the wild snakes with a efficent program.
-ban them because they are dangerous is total misunderstanding. Boa constrictors are almost harmelss snakes the other not always but how many perosns were killed by them? You can count em on your fingers. How many are killed by dogs, guns, drugs, cars, ecc ecc. There's no sense to ban them, just promove responsible ownership of ALL animals and request a permit for potentially dangerous ones.
    - Imagine, in this period of general crisis to leave thousands of people without theyr work!
-This bill is totally nonsense, just like old pit bull bans. Criminals will keep dangerous animals in a dangerous way in any way, and of course they can dump em free easyer because they even can't sell them! Only honest and responsible keepers will suffer the conseguence of this bill.
-Put reticulated python, burmese python and green anaconda on the same "level" of boa constrictor shows the total ignorance of who wrote it!

Leave happy good and reponsible herpers live theyr lives legally.

I have burms, ball pythons and boa constrictor since over 15 years and i would never get rid of them just because someone wants to express it's frustrations!

  25. As a constituent, I am writing to urge you to oppose H.R. 2811/S. 373, which prohibits interstate trade of several species of pythons and boa constrictors that have been common household pets for decades. My opposition does not intend to downplay the real problems that many invasive species pose for our nation’s ecosystems. I am opposed to S. 373/H.R.2811 because it will leave the hundreds of thousands of responsible Americans that own pythons and boa constrictors without any options for the next thirty years or more.

For example, this bill will prohibit people with pet snakes from moving to a new state in order to gain employment or care for an ill or elderly family member. It will not allow pet owners to seek specialized veterinary care that may only exist in another state. It will prohibit our honorable American service men and women from returning to their home states with their pets after their tour of duty is complete. Finally, this bill will prevent Americans forced to evacuate with their snakes from natural disaster areas on routes that takes them across state lines.

Hard working Americans faced with the situations listed above will be forced to either break the law, let their snakes loose, or kill their beloved pets. I respectfully hope that you will agree with me when I say that all of these options are unacceptable.

Please do all you can to oppose this legislation until it can be written in a way that provides reasonable options for the thousands of responsible python and boa constrictor owners living in our great state and tens of thousands more around the rest of the country. Thank you for your consideration.

  27. Please don't take my babies away!! I love my boas, and if you met them, you would too. I'm not a breeder, I don't make money off my animals (though I've spent 10k + on them+food+equipment) they are my pets and I care so much about them. Please don't make this DEVISTATING mistake.

  29. Being a private breeder of reptiles and amphibians has added a quality to my life that I did not have before I began. I have realized an opportunity to make a living doing something I love, and sharing that with the people I care about. Without these animals, public awareness of reptiles and amphibians will be downgraded.

  37. We mainly keep ball pythons but do have some boas which are on the list. There aren't very many climates that these tropical animals can live in the wild. Please do your homework and see how many people are killed or injured by dogs and horses every year then compare that number to pythons and boas. We think you will be surprised to see those results. Please consider a NO vote on these bills.

  51. Public ignorance and uneducation concerning reptiles has enabled this bill to get as far as it has. Passing this bill will put many out of work and destroy the lives of many that have invested a lifetime with these animals. Most free roaming pythons in south Florida are due to hurricanes not irresponsible snake keepers. Passing this bill will certainly be the beginning of us United States citizens to lose our rights.
