SUPPORT KURDISTAN INDEPENDENCE
We urge you to support Kurdish national aspirations and to back an independent Kurdistan
Kurds have been the world?s largest ethnic group without a state since the aftermath of the First World War. Since that time, Kurds have endured innumerable hardships, living under brutal regimes, denied basic human and political rights and subject to both arbitrary and targeted acts of brute force and extreme violence, including the use of chemical weapons against innocent civilian populations.
The Kurds have proven themselves to be peace-seeking and peace-loving people. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq is already a state within a state and has been functioning as an ethnically, culturally, and philosophically distinct nation. Even as the situation in Iraq and in the region deteriorates, Kurdistan has remained an example of diversity, equality, religious tolerance, democratic principles, and economic growth. To defend these principles, which are shared by allies foremost the United States, Kurdistan is currently fighting sectarianism within Iraq?s borders as well as terrorism and extremism in the region, while doing its best to absorb and support an influx of internally displaced people and refugees who recognize Kurdistan as a haven for religious, sectarian and ethnic minorities and the oppressed.
Iraq continues to suffer from chaos, terrorism and a sectarian civil war, and it appears every feasible alternative has now been exhausted.
In order to continue to thrive and most effectively help its neighbors and the rest of Iraq get back on the correct track, the Kurdistan Regional Government requires a mandate that it can only achieve through statehood. For its own survival and the benefit of its neighbors and allies, the time has come for Kurdistan?s six million inhabitants to secede from Iraq.
In accordance with the United Nations charter, we believe the Kurdish people have the right to establish an independent Kurdistan state through democratic means. The Kurds have been and continue to be counted among America?s best allies, and the United States Government including the U.S. Congress should reciprocate by endorsing our wish for independence through peaceful means.
